Guest guest
Roxana / all, I always tried to avoid medicines, but my son Victor (09) is now taking Risperdal (03 drops / 03 times a day) to decrease its intense hyperactivity. The medication is really working well and he is more concentrated / calm. My 7 yr old son just started Risperdol this past summer and I was the parent that swore that I would NEVER medicate my son. But I have found that symptoms can change and sometimes you really don't have a choice if you want the best for your child. He used to be the sweetest child and so very loving and it seemed it just changed to where he had to have the last word and would argue even if I wouldn't respond. His personality changed and eventually I was wore out from the obstinance and the defiance. We tried weaning him off of it but the symptoms came right back. So now I have my sweet loving little boy back with none of the defiance. I look at meds (now) as another form of treatment that I would not deny my son. She is trying to adapt but I believe the right med would be helpful. She is not getting any special service now. I am waiting to see how she manages her load. She has 6 classes (full time),luckily her dorm is confortable and the girls are nice but she still stressed out due to the lack of privacy, her time alone is extremely important to her. Guest guest
I know that with my son, we started to go up and up. Eventually, we had to add in another medication (and then eventually a third) in order to keep him calm. I think that there isn't a perfect dosage for drugs. Each child is different. What I do know is that the need constantly changes and needs to be reassessed. We take my son to his psychiatrist monthly. We don't make changes very often, but at least I feel that we keep a watchful eye on it. Also with Risperdal, a person needs to have yearly or twice a year blood tests. There are similar needs with other meds as well. Find phone numbers fast with the New AOL Yellow Pages!
Guest guest
Risperdal was wonderful for my son, but I was worried about weight gain too. We ended up with lamictal and it is like a wonder drug for him. I also took risperdal at one time and it really worked for me. I got better with a mood stabilizer and was able to discontinue the risperdal. I do, however, take it if I feel a manic coming on. I have Bipolar. It seemed to really help to stablize both my son and me.Medicine has really helped my son. I believe that God has given it to us as a way of healing. If we had a heart problem, we wouldn't hesitate to take meds. You might think of it this way too...I have reflux. I don't have it every day, but when I do, it is really bad. I take something every day so I can avoid those awful attacks. He might not have behavioral issues every single day, but we have to treat them every day for their and our safety.Hope this helps. I have dealt with the medicine issue so many times...DeanaSent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry®From: gina9431@...Sender: Date: Wed, 11 Aug 2010 11:05:20 -0500 (CDT)< >Reply Subject: ( ) Risperdal Who has experience with Risperdal? Guest guest
I think the weight gain factor is a concern I would have . The doctors seem to like Risperal but it does cause weight gain a lot like Abilify. Guest guest
My son did well on Risperdal in the beginning; I believe this is something that you must continue and not break from. We started out at .5mg, and was up to 2mg before we took him off for good. Had to keep increasing the dosage as he gained weight - this drug made my son ravenously hungry - so much so he had to have a snack in the middle of the day at school. The Risperdal was then supplemented with Prozac, and eventually, did not work any more. This was over a period of about 2 years. We did see improvement in the beginning, however. My son is now 10, so it was about 3 years ago we started that trial. Did control tics fairly well, although we did still have a few. Anger impulses were the hardest to control from the beginning, and did not improve to the point he could remain in a classroom setting (he has been homeschooled for the past year). As we all know too well, each child is different! Good luck!

Guest guest
I just got home from an appointment with my dd age 10. The dr gave us a prescription for Risperdal M-tabs. Here is a link to a web site the dr gave me http://www.risperdal.com/faqs_autisticdisorder.html#mtab For my daughter we are hopeing that the Risperadal will help with her mood swings so that she can function better in the school setting. And also so that I can keep my sanity a bit. I have struggled with any medications with my kids but I have gotten to the point that it is worth trying so that I can keep my sanity. I hope it helps. Guest guest
We had our son on Risperdal for about a year. He gained like 20 lbs and developing cellutis all over his body. We got him off and now he is taking Geodon twice a day. It doesn't work as well as Risperdal but the weight came off right away. Guest guest
Since switching my ds from Risperdal to the Abilify I am noticing a huge increase in his appetite as well, but for me at first this was a good thing you see, my ds wouldn't eat hardly anything because of all the types of ADHD meds he had been on over the yrs. (This was long before he was diagnosed HFA) I mean he wouldn't meat or vegetables, or fruits only foods like PB & J, hotdogs & Spaghettio's. So when he started to actually get an appetite I thought this was good, but now I'm starting to second guess myself. He has gained about 25# this summer. I don't want him gaining too much weight because obesity runs in my family. I've been writing down these other meds that I've seen on these posts because I've haven't heard of them before, he has an appt. with his Dr. in Sept. so I will discuss these other options with her then. .:~Anita~:. Guest guest
My son started on Abilify, which caused large weight gain. However, it worked so well, that we tried metformin to try to slow the weight gain down. I don't know what about the metformin didn't agree with him, but he became absolutely obsessed with food on it. It was the first time his doctor had seen that kind of reaction on anyone however. He is now taking seroquel XR and Intuniv, and the weight issues have stabilized, and he is doing really well with them. Both of them made him tired to start with, but ramping the dosage up slowly seemed to help that. Whatever meds you try, make sure the doctor is having periodic blood sugar and cholesterol checks done if those are some of the potential side effects. > > > > My son was on Abilify for several years.
