hello all-

it has been awhile since i have been here, but my 12 yo daughter recently

received her diagnosis of aspergers. i have known for sometime, but this is

news to her. she suffers from much anxiety, has difficulty sleeping and over

the last year (thanx puberty) has become argumentive and unreasonable. this may

sound typical for a pre-teen but as you all know here, it is different with an

aspie.

because of these symptoms, her psych recommended paxil. my husband takes this

and this works well for him, so dr felt it might work as well for my daughter.

it was a difficult decision to begin the meds, but there didn't seem to be any

other way, as we tried many alternatives over the last few years. so, she began

taking 10mg paxil about 3 weeks ago. the very next morning, i heard a change in

her footsteps. she had always walked lightly and slowly, now she walked harder

and quicker. and she became a little hyper-talking faster, walking faster

clipping corners. she also complained of headache. the dr. said, give it time,

4- 6 weeks for full affect. she seemed a tiny bit less anxious that first week

but still hyper. she ended up breaking her arm from jumping off a " little

tykes " gym. she handled the accident and subsequent doctor visits well, except

her anxiety returned in full. the next week she came down with an intense

respitory virus which is still ongoing with alot of coughing. after that week,

she got pink eye in both eyes(that was last weekend) and now tonight, her throat

hurts and she has white spots on her tonsils. i understand that her immune

system is proably been lowered after breaking her arm and one thing led to

another but i have to wonder if paxil isn't playing a part in this. she rarely

gets sick.

i googled counteracts with paxil, as i wondered if some of the cold meds i had

been giving her was counteract the paxil's effectiveness. what i came about was

long blogs about the difficulties in stopping paxil. and now i am very

concerned about that too.

is one med more effective than another, or better suited for children? how long

does it usuallly take to see changes in behaviour. i tend to trust what i read

on these groups more than the doctors.

appreciating your time and effort,

melody k.
