Guest guest
Hi welcome to our group. A neurologist DX is good if you need a DX for school accomodations some schools require an MD to diagnosis(DX) Asperger. I first had a neuropyschologist test my daughter. This provided so much information on cognitive functioning. Many kids with AS have a spilt in there IQ's. High verbal skills, high reasoning slow processing sometimes deficits in working memory. So you find out so much about there learning deficits etc. A neurologist will give you scripts for OT and speech if you need it. My daughter did not have any prosody of speech at all. I didn't think an MD would DX her with AS and I was right but other kids have a distinctive speech pattern and a medical DX is easier to make. The nuerologist wrongly DX my daughter in first grade with OCD. After the neuropsch 3rd grade they put their stamp on DX of AS. She is now in 5th grade. DX is important for school accomodations to get scripts for medication (AS kids are very sensitive) to seek therapist that truely know AS (so many say they do and don't). Good luck, Pam > > Hi, > > Sorry for this long post. I am new to this group and new to learning about Asperger's. My husband and I took our 8 year old son in to see his Pediatrician and we asked him about Apperger's because our son show alot of the behavioral characteristics that we've read about Asperger's. Our Pediatrician is great and after talking with my husband and I and also with our son, he referred us to a Pediatric Neurologist. > > Some of the things about our little man are: slow processing speed, trouble transitioning activities, doesn't 'fit in' with his peers (though he tries to, but is just fine by himeself or playing with someone youger or even talking to adults), he gets stuck on one subject and that is his whole focus and topic of conversation for weeks, communication skills, lack of motor skills and clumsiness, he does not like to write at all, hard time explaining his thoughts, very logical thinker, does best with a routine, has meltdowns with change. > > We Homeschool and he excels academically, especially science, and he loves to read. He is such a loving and smart child and my husband and I are really just looking for better ways for us to focus on his strengths and interests and teach him right and wrong, so he will become a productive young man one day. > > For some reason, my husband and I are hesitant to schedule the appointment with the Pediatric Neurologist. How do you really know if someone has Asperger's? Did most of you find out by visiting a Neurologits? > > Also, our son did have speech delays (at 3, he only said 10 words). He qualified for our local school program and went to Speech, PT, and OT. By the end of 1st grade, he had tested out of everything except speech, which was mainly to work of reading comprhension and articulation. > > Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences. > > Blessings, > Kristy >
Guest guest
I really appreciate and enjoyed reading through all the replies. My hubby and I have decided to go ahead and make the appointment with a pediatric neurologist. We have to be referred out of town, as we don't have any in our town. We are being referred to either Dallas or Little Rock. Do any of you live in these areas and recommend a doctor? Thanks again, this group is such a blessing.
