Guest guest
My son Owen is 4.5 and was diagnosed with mild Asperger's in May. Right now he is in an integrated preschool program 5 days a week, from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m., after which he is bused to Kindercare, a very well- respected daycare center. He's been going to Kindercare for several years now, and his 2-year-old brother goes there as well. Until recently it's been a good solution, but lately he is really doing poorly there. While I give them credit for keeping the kids in a clean, safe and fun environment, there isn't any structure, it can get very loud, and teh teachers are constantly changing so there is constant change. I recognize that this is tough for Owen, but until recently it doidn't bother him. Now that he's accustomed to his preschool program, when he has to spend more than a few hours a day there he has a very tough time. Yesterday, for instance, he spent the entire day there - when I picked him up they told me that he tried to bite someone (he's never done that before), hit another child an drefused to participate in anything all day. Part of me was furious that they didn't do anything to help him thorugh this, the other part was so embarassed and ashamed. I really don't know what to do. He's not learning anything there and every time he has to spend a longer period of time there I worry that he's going to backslide. Does anyone have any suggestions?
