Guest guest
Hi Dina, I am going to be talking to an ocd specialist today and one of the questions I wanted to ask is about melatonin. I want to give it to Bre because she is having trouble sleeping now. So I will ask about age, weight, etc. Then I will post later what he says! Guest guest
We give my 14yo son melatonin occasionally, with the blessing of his pdoc (he has ADHD, NLD and Tourette's). I was able to find 100 mg tablets at our local Walgreen's (I think 300 mg is more standard). Sometimes 1 tablet is enough, sometimes he needs 2. I don't think he has ever had to take the full 300 mg. Hope this helps, and good luck! P. dina_n_jones <dina.n.jones@...> wrote: My non-OCD'er who is 9 is suddenly having terrible insomnia. I have suffered from it as an adult, but never as a child. Guest guest
Melatonin has worked wonders for us. I give Elise 1mg in her orange juice right before bed. She had trouble with the pills because they dissolve quickly; thankfully it comes in a liquid as well. More costly than the pills but worth every penny! _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of dina_n_jones Sent: Wednesday, March 14, 2007 1:33 AM Subject: How much melatonin? Guest guest
Oops, I guess I meant 1 mg, not 100 mg for my 14yo! I am at work and not looking at the bottle. I knew there was a 1 involved! P. Guest guest
, Where do you get the liquid? Does she need it every night? Dina
Guest guest
I think I got it at GNC the first time, and then found it at a local heath food store for less. I give it to her every night..she wouldn't sleep without it. After trying a lot of prescription drugs with ill effects, Melatonin has been a gift. Sadly I know from other posts that it doesn't work for everyone. I hope you find it helpful. _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Dina Sent: Wednesday, March 14, 2007 6:11 PM Subject: Re: How much melatonin? , Where do you get the liquid? Guest guest
Hi , I think you can go up to about 3mg, however Dr McCandles uses clonidine at a very low dose for her grandchild, she told me it works better for them as melatonin wasn¹t effective  it is a drug for hypertension, prehaps if you email her  we might have tried it vs melatonin if melatonin hadn¹t worked so well for us  with our child melatonin from Kirkmans was the only one that worked and it was instant as in the first night  so sorry can¹t help any more On 29/2/08 8:20 AM, " " <holden5577@...> wrote: > > > > > My son has been on 1 mg of melatonin ofr about a month, but he is > still waking up every 3 hours. Guest guest
You can increase it to 2 mg for 1 week and then go as high as 3 mg after that -if 2 doesn't work. Consider addressing phenol issues or yeast overgrowth, those are common causes of sleep problems http://www.danasview.net/phenol.htm http://www.danasview.net/yeast.htm > can't imagine this being yeast related b/c he doesn't show any of his > typical yeast behaviors, but I have had to stop any yeast treatments > over the last 3 weeks b/c of GPL testing for yeast. My son's yeast behaviors changed over time, so it is likely it is a yeast problem if you have recently stopped yeast treatments. Guest guest
My son was 14 when we started the melatonin. He started with 3 mg and then moved to 6 mg. He weighed around 120 when he started so that might give you an idea of how much you could take. It only helps him so much so sometimes I'll put some lavendar essential oil on his chest and the combination will usually work. Guest guest
My son is almost 10, but only weighs about 50 pounds. His neurologist has recommended 3mg per night, and 6 if he is still awake a couple hours later. > > I bought some melatonin tablets, thinking of using them myself, and > now I am thinking of giving them to my son. Guest guest
You can call and ask your doctor this question so that you get the right amount. Our doc lets us know how much to use for our ds. RoxannaYou're UniqueJust like everyone else... Re: ( ) how much melatonin? My son was 14 when we started the melatonin. Guest guest
It worked!!!! I gave him like 1mg, and this is the second night in a row he has gone righ tto sleep!!!! Now for my next question...since melatonin is produced by the body naturally..if I continue to supplement it for him will he become dependent on it? He sure was a nicer boy this afternoon after a good nights sleep. thanks, kate
Guest guest
Hey guys, I also just bought melatonin today it is 3mg tablets and I am giving it to my husband tonight for the first time and afer an hour of taking it he was sleepy and went to bed so I will let ya know tomorrow how he slept but as far as collin goes is it safe to give him, he is taking medtadate for his adhd twice a day 20mg and now he is on the respirdal 0.5mg also he is still taking 1/2 a tablet of paxil for the rest of this week till I can ween him off of it totally. I should probably wait till he is off the paxil and then check with the doctor. How much would I give him?? He is 10 years old and ways about 51 pounds,. He is thin. Please let me know what you think if I can give it to him safely and how much I should use. Thanks, > > It worked!!!! Guest guest
I would definitely get your dr.'s advice especially since other medications are involved. My 17 year old just started taking Melatonin. The psychiatrist said to follow the bottles' dosage for adults. My son weighs 185 lbs. Pam :)It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. Guest guest
, If you are in doubt as to how much, ASK HIS DOCTOR!!! I did, and he told me more than I would've done on my own. > > > > It worked!!!! I gave him like 1mg, and this is the second night in a > row he has gone righ tto sleep!!!! Guest guest
Hi there, I am mostly a lurker at this point, but my son has been taking melatonin for a couple years and it just recently stopped working for him. He is 9 and about 52 lbs and was taking 8-10 mgs. I was giving him a 5mg and a 3mg and the doctor said he could take more so then he was taking 2, 5 mgs tablets and still up until 12-1am. The dr then prescribed Clonidine and it works like a charm, only 1 mg. It's safe for kids and supposedly non-addicting. Although I can't imagine my son or many Aspies ever getting off a sleep aid! Guest guest
Does anybody know if Melatonin can be crushed and mixed into food, like yogurt? Or would that change the desired effect? Sabine >
