Guest guest
Is anybody else struggling with advanced class placement for their aspie? How does one decide whether he should be in more advanced classes with more accommodations or grade-level classes where he can be more on his own? Some background. My son placed into the gifted program when he was young. He did that for a few years, but was kicked out for his various issues, mainly he worked too slowly in class, didn't provide enough detail in his answers and didn't get homework done. He had no accommodations at all. I think all of this stuff could have been resolved with accommodations. Although with jr/sr high Pre-AP/AP classes I'm not so sure. If it were up to me, this would be a no-brainer. He is only borderline gifted with a verbal IQ of 130 and non-verbal IQ of 125, and his processing speed and working memory are considerably lower. I really think college classes can wait until college. Grade-level is fine with me. But HE misses his GT classes and wants to get back into the more advanced classes. He insisted on trying to sign up for a couple. I couldn't even talk him into just trying one. I would not think the school will let him take these classes as it stands. I went ahead and filled out the forms because I decided it is the school that needs to say " no " not Mom. In any case, I don't know whether I should dismiss this wish of his as unrealistic or be encouraging. I really don't. He aced the state reading exam this year, but his semester exam grades range from 43 to A's. His grades range from just passing to A's--all grade level. You just never know with him. I really don't feel like I have a clue what he is capable of at this point or what is realistic, and I don't know how to tell! Any BTDT? Thoughts? I don't know if I can trust the school staff's opinions--they will just want to make it easy on the teachers. Thanks in advance!
