It is like a switch went off after the holiday break. He has ilke 3-4 fixations daily. One thing he does that I can't stand is something with his eyes. He has always had good eye contact as far as I know but over the past year we noticed he kind of doesn't look right in our eyes. When he seems to be drifting into a thought it looks like one eye moves over and he is looking at something other than our eyes. It is weird to explain, i don't mean you can see his eye ball move over. it's like if you stare at the spot in between the eyes. does anyone know what i am talking about? i really hope so. it is making me nuts. i don't want him to do that to anyone, people will get annoyed and think he isn't listening or that he is strange. Guest guest
Hi , I agree with ... maybe check into seeing whether or not there is something " physical " to the change in eye movement. Do you have any concern about his focus when this happens? Hard to explain, but do you feel he is 'drifting off in space' at all? The reason I ask (and I hope I don't worry you further) is my daughter, we learned, was having absence seizures. Very brief spans - no more than a second or so - where she would drift off into, what seemed, her own world. Velvet > > > Hi > > Has he had his eyes checked lately ??? Guest guest
Kids with autism spectrum disorders often have vision problems that regular optomotrists don't know how to diagnose. My son was diagnosed by a Dr. Shidlofsky. He gets an acknowledgement in the book The Out of Sync child. He works with lots of kids who have AS, learning disabilities etc. If you go on to his website you can learn more about this. http://www.dr-s.net/ In addition to learning about what these doctors do you can find a doctor in your area who does the same thing. You need to click the " directory " link and fill in the information. My son's behavior improved once he got his prism lenses and he's going to be getting vision therapy to help with his tracking and convergence problems. Let me know how it goes. Guest guest
Hi . Our son started out without eye contact. That was one of the biggies for the dx. So,,,,,,,,,,,the lack of eye contact AND an AS diagnoses sounds like it fits. But, since it's a new "behavior",,,,,it wouldn't hurt to check it out. Keep us posted. Have a good day!!! Guest guest
it is weird that you said that because my mother just gave me an article about not knowing that your child could be having a small seizure when their eyes might look far away. I will check into it right away. the thing is it happens when he is upset, it doesn't seem to happen unvoluntary. you know what i mean, well i guess this is just another thing now i have to research. i am having such a hard time with him. he has so many issues. melissa > > > > > > Hi > > > > Has he had his eyes checked lately ??? Guest guest
: How old is your son? My son was DX last summer. It wasn't a slam dunk. The Developmental Specialist basically put a composite based on a variety of behaviors to come up with it. He has pretty good eye contact, is affectionate, overly friendly, etc. However, his ackward socialization, speech issues, dysgraphia all pointed towards AS. As he gets closer to 8, we are seeing OCD type behaviors which he never had b4. I am not an expert in AS but thought I read that it tends to get DX and behaviors emerge when kids start elementary school. We had some friends with an AS son, who when he hit puberty his behaviors became so severe that he was DX as Autistic. and/or Robin Lemke <jrisjs@...> wrote: Hi . Guest guest
Excellent information; they are called DEVELOPMENTAL EYE SPECIALISTS, and they have more training than your eye doctor; thus, your eye doctor is NOT supposed to even tell you---our's knew, and was soooooo glad we found out for our son---so, for six years, he went undiagnosed---in a year, he has completed vision therapy; we did not know he had an eye that went out and that was making his ability to learn that much harder....urgh...Ruthie ( ) Re: my son does this weird thing with his eyes Kids with autism spectrum disorders often have vision problems that regular optomotrists don't know how to diagnose.
