Guest guest
No. He wouldn't have to need OT in severel areas to qualify for OT. He just needs to qualify for OT in any area that an OT is responsible for working on. Ironic aside, my ds got an psych eval today for his MFE and the psych asked if he ever had OT before because his handwriting is not so great. It kind of LOL to me because I always asked at the school and they would never admit there was a problem. Now that we are e-schooling, I haven't had anyone try to get out of services yet. Kind of weird in a curious way. RoxannaAutism Happens ( ) Re: special services question Date: Wednesday, April 9, 2008, 6:12 PM From what you are describing, it sounds like your son has "dysgraphia, " which is a handwriting disability. This is from the national Center for learning disabilities website . . .http://www.ncld. org/index. php?option=content & task=view & id=468My son's school system did not diagnose him, for years the school OT just said he had fine motor difficulties. It was when I took him for a neurocognitive evaluation, that the psychologist recognized it right away.Has your son had a recent MFE? Perhaps you can request an IEE in that you disagree with their OT findings. The school needs to address this and make appropriate modifications for his work, give him OT to help with the writing and down the road look into assistive technology. What are the Warning Signs of Dysgraphia?Just having bad handwriting doesn't mean a person has dysgraphia. Since dysgraphia is a processing disorder, difficulties can change throughout a lifetime. However since writing is a developmental process -children learn the motor skills needed to write, while learning the thinking skills needed to communicate on paper - difficulties can also overlap. If a person has trouble in any of the areas below, additional help may be beneficial. Tight, awkward pencil grip and body position Illegible handwriting Avoiding writing or drawing tasks Tiring quickly while writing ____________ _________ _________ _________ _________ __
