In a blog on disability applications in TN: "The actual statistics are as follows: In 2003, Tennessee denied 74.3% of all initial applications for disability. 92.1% of all first appeals in Tennessee were likewise denied." I would say, from the people I know, this is absolutely true. There is a web site: www.disabilitysecrets.com that has some good information about applying, it is a lawyers site, but as you can see from above, in TN that is the only way to get it!Every state is different, but TN is one of the worst. If your adult child cannot get SSI disabiity, there is nothing, nada, zero in the way of services for autism and related disorders. Legistlation passed a resolution several years ago to fund and provide some services, but not one dollar has been appropriated for it, yet, years later! If your are MR diagnosis, those parents have been better organized and more vocal and there are some $$ for it. However, there is also a waiting list of over 6,000 people to get these few services, unless you are in danger of dying without services. My point of this very negative perspective: Get involved with the legislators at your state level, study the proposed presidential candidates. Kick, yell and scream and then listen to them tell you what a bad budget year it is, blah, blah, blah!Good luck, I hope you can get SSI for your son.Sue> cajabra <cajabra@...> wrote: > People have told me I should be able to get financial help for my son > because he has a disability.
