Guest guest
Thank you for your response. I do have a prescription from Pfeiffer Treatment Center and a note from a local doctor but according to the district that does not matter. I have been taking these enzymes to him for lunch for 3 years. I have tried to have it written into his IEP with no success. I definitely won't make them think we are professionals but rather point out that I am not the only parent who believes in this form of treatment. I haven't decided what I will do specifically but looking at all angles. All input is welcome. Thank you. Tami Re:preparing for mediation with school Tami I wanted to comment that I would not even mention this email group to a school district in the context of mediation or an IEP. We are not professionals and are really no more than a faceless and nameless group of anonymous individuals who discuss protocols that are not typically mainstream. Anybody on here could even claim to be a Dr. or Nurse and nobody would know the difference. We have absolutely no standing whatsoever with a school district - and shouldn't. How do you know what kind of cockamamie advice you could get here or anywhere on the internet for that matter. You are probably here - like me - because you need somewhere to talk these things over and this is a good group - but I do check things out for myself elsewhere and discuss with Drs. I think you would be doing yourself a disservice just by taking up time talking about something that is irrelevant to a school. I missed out on your original discussion but am assuming it has to do with administration of enzymes during school hours or something like that. The ONLY thing a school has to pay attention to is a professional recommendation. Go get a Dr. to write you a letter and you will accomplish everything you want. They are required by law to follow a Dr.s directions. I needed my son to leave school early 2 days a week every week and the storm clouds starting gathering over Mount School District Special Ed Dept. while they practiced putting on frowns and saying no. So I went back to our Neuropsych who wrote a letter stating that he recommended an early dismissal for reasons of stamina and that was the end of it. No more discussion - they had to respond to a professional medical recommendation. You might want to go to the s Law website and search for information regarding medical issues. You can also call or email them and they will answer questions for you. They are headed up by and Pam . Pete has successfully argued 2 cases for Special Education in front of the US Supreme Court, and countless others in lower courts. I would also recommend that you contact your local Downs organization and ask if they have anyone who is familiar with this issue. I have found that The Upside of Downs - ( I don't know if they are national ) here locally has a super strong parent advocacy group and they are just militant about knowing the law and their parental rights in the school districts - I've found them to be a very good resource. The Downs kids were way ahead of the autistic kids in getting services, aides, etc. In fact in my school district the Downs kids all have an aide while kids with obvious other medical conditions are getting zip. It was all a matter of organization and collective clout. Have you contacted the Learning Disabilities Association? LDA. Or the ARC of your state? These people all have years and years of experience that the autism community is just now gathering. You could also contact your County Job and Family Services to just ask if they can point you to a parent advocacy group. There is a group in Ohio called OCECD or Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities. OCECD is a great org - and they have sister groups in 13 other states - but you'd have to contact them to see which ones. They are a free parent advocacy organization and will consult with you for free on your particular issues. Also - you could call your State Dept of Education and ask for help. I think there are many other avenues for you to get what you want besides giving them the name of an internet website and thinking that that will legitimize what you want to do.
