Lori, I'm an enzyme practitioner, a Digestive Health Specialist. I know what the

enzymes can and can't do, but I 've been reading and listening on this group and

others and I don't always understand some of the opinions and observations . I

don't think the enzymes have been adequately explained by houston or enzymedica

and others.

what I was asking is , the enzymes (plant) are designed to digest food in the

stomach before the normal body processes react. that being said if the child has

a food that has certain pro/cho/fat and is loaded with vitamin a, b , c for

instance. if the enzyme blend ( the body likes to work in synergy) is adequate

to digest the food , it will digest up to 57% of the pro, 80% of the cho and 10%

of fat in that meal, directly across the stomach and provide that substrate and

vitamins, minerals and into the blood stream. now it has to be determined if

they have problems with overburdening the liver to further break things up to

make it easier to become poop and pee (the elimination channels) and then

determine how " clogged " the lymphatic system may be as this one deals with

fats, this is also to determine how well the kidneys can handle sugar in

clearing the blood, medicine doesn't measure sucrose in the urine. this is a

big factor in bags under eyes and dark circles or " shiners " .

so I was curious if that is how you folks learn how they work. plant enzymes by

themselves are not food replacement, they digest food and when taken in between

meals go around and " clean " things up.

so imo with enzyme replacement therapy, unless there is a specific malady that

has a beginning and an endpoint for a particular enzyme product to " fix " most

people and children that eat a cooked food diet, have problems with certain food

groups, the enz. replac. therap is a life long commitment.

in my practice, we modify the diet , give appropriate enzy replac for reflexes

that the body shows us and when the reflexes go away , we back down (or stop)

using certain prods. designed to help that immune or eliminating or

detoxification channel and get down to a " basic enzyme blend " that provides just

enzymes to digest food.

we also check for structural issues that may require chiro adj or a short leg

that requires a lift/orthotic or special shoes as if left unchecked can lead to

a total hip replac/ knee replac. in later life and uses up an incredible amount

of minerals that are hard to replace.

I didn't understand what " challenge the diet means " is it that you put foods

back in that were determined to be problematic and see how it goes without

enzymes? it takes a long time to heal the villi in the small intestine and any

infraction can set some people back months. it also takes digesting pro/fat to

make this happen. carbs are for energy, they do nothing to repair organ systems.

there is still research going on regarding peptides and digesting of them , but

they again are addressing one component of the diet perhaps and the body just

doesn't work in a vacuum and o one can eat all they want and have complete

health.

I have nothing against houston or others, I just feel bad that some people are

confused by it and " piece meal " the enzmes and expect it all to work, this a

medical model approach of symptom management and not always healing the organ

systems. a lot of people get lucky with this approach , a lot of kids are easy

to fix as they can repair quickly given the right substrate and time as their

whole being is geared to grow and live.

so I wasn't trying to critizize. just trying to help if I can. linda rn

Re: Want to challenge the diet - need advice

,

The enzymes were created by Devin Houston to help " replace " the diet. His

digestive enzymes Peptizyde and TriEnza have DPPIV in them that is the

enzyme that best breaks down the peptides created by gluten, casein, and

soy. This is controversial however with many doctors but I know of many

success stories of kids doing as well and some even doing better with

enzymes instead of the diet. I trusted Devin's enzymes because he has over

25 years in the field of digestive enzymes and he is a PhD biochemist and is

- in my opinion - the most qualified individual to be creating digestive

enzyme products for our children. Besides, he is the most caring person you

will ever meet and will take time to talk personally to any parent who has

questions.

My son has done AMAZING on his enzymes and started gaining weight and

looking healthy for the first time ever after starting on them.

Because my son responded so well to the diet, I kept doing it (although not

a strictly - allowing for cross contamination and small amounts in foods)

with enzymes for the past 6-7 years. I am hoping that as a result of

's progress and hopefully a healed gut by now, he will respond well to

enzymes only and can go back to eating regular food.

Some kids have done this without enzymes but I want to keep doing them as a

saftey net. Our kids have been damaged by mercury so that their digestive

systems do not function as well as they should. Healthy digestion is

critical for healthy bodies and minds.

wow, this definately sounds like it may be an issue for my duaghter, We

have done all her allergy tests, and nutritionally done what were supposed

to after finding out she must be GF/CF/Df/EF/PF But we still have these

issue about 1/2 hour after she eats, that her dark circles and puffiness

comes out. Adn we were always told they were allergic shiners.

But your explanation of liver function makes sense, and I agree, reading

all the things on here can be very confusing, and I am totally overwhelmed

and admire all these parents that are able to follow along. We have a very

difficult time getting supplements in my 5 yrs old. And have spent our

entire budget on things to help her, to only dump them down the drain. It

is very frustrating. I would love to know more about this if you are

willing to share..
