Guest guest
Where do you live? I guess my last message didn't get through I am so confused, well not confused but overloaded with all this information. First, doo ANY of the DAN doctors take medicaid? or take insurance? I called a place yesterday and they want $1300 to test my son. That in itself is a crime. Can I make his doctor test him for deficiencies? Where can I find someone who actually knows what they are talking about when it comes to supplements. I don't think GNC is the answer. I am a little frustrated because I don't knwo any dietitians anymore - my mother passed a while ago - I am sure she woud be all over this. I called one DAN! doctor on the list and they don't do autism issues anymore just pain management i guess there is even more money in that. So bitter? its my frustration. I am not going to just put my son on stuff without talking with a porfessional but its seems that I can't find one to do that. i guess i will just start there I can't remember what my other post said, I guess it wasn't important
Guest guest
I am sorry you are so frustrated. It is hard to deal with what we have been throw with so little help from the medical community. In our area, no DAN! doc takes insurance. I never did go to one, but did use a Certified Nutritionist who I paid by the hour. I don't even remember how I found her. However, I did most of what I have done based on my own research. I have spent hours upon hours, late at night when I was exhasted, trying to figure out how to pull my then 3 year old boarderline ASD son away from ASD and into " typical. " Then he had a vocabulary of 30-50 words, now he speaks in full sentences. He is still delayed in all areas, but no where near where he was when I started. Today he is a 5 year old who still stuggles, but is considered SID/SPD (sensory issues) and not ASD. I have never been one to blindly trust the medical profession, but this situation forced me to take my son's health adn development into my own hands. You must read and seek and research and talk to other parents who have found success iwth biomed. They can guide you, help you, support you. But you can do it. And you can start with basic things taht would not hurt a child regardless if you have medical input. I started with removing all artifical colors and flavors, preservatives and High Fructose Corn Syrup. I also added Cod Liver Oil, zinc and magnesium. The results were huge, esp in his speech. I then started HNI digestive enzymes as an altervative to GF/CF diet. We eventully discovered he had a corn intolerance and removed all corn products from his diet (enzymes do not seem to help corn)> It has not been easy but neither was the daily life we lived with him. We now have him in private OT/PT to address his severe sensory issues that the school was not really addressing. He is doing great. Also, we changed Ped's. His previous one, at his 4 year check, was amazed at his progress, and although I had brought her much research materials to read, just said she knew nothing about it all but was sure it was helping. However, she would not sign an auth for him to be given his enzymes at the drop off kids care I use. I was on a wait list for a year to get into another practice where the MD's have more experience with biomed and use alternative treatments along side western med. I now have a doc who listens to me about using a med with anything artifical, and one who gladly signed the enzyme auth. You must become your child's advocate, it is hard...it is exhasting, but the reward are so worth it. My life is still tough today because of my special child, but it is better than it was and I have hope it will only get better, that he will get better, and lead a typical, normal life. Good Luck...ask questions, esp specific ones. The parents on this board are the best! denice mystic1930 <mystic1930@...> wrote: I am so confused, well not confused but overloaded with all this information. Guest guest
Very well said, Denice. May I suggest a few books as well, that may help on your journey. Although they don't replace a medical doctor, they are both written by MD's and are at least a starting point. Changing the Course of Autism, by Jepson Healing the 4 A's: Autism, ADHD, Allergies and Asthma, by Bock Both of them can be found on amazon.com Also, check out Dana's site: www.danasview.net She has a wealth of information there, and I believe she did everything on her own, without a medical doctor. We, too, made progress just with removing the " garbage " from my son's diet--high fructose corn syrup, all food dyes, preservatives, etc. That in itself made a huge difference. He is far from cured, but life is certainly better than it was a year ago. Best wishes to you! Guest guest
I've been watching the responses to your questions and I agree with what everyone has said to you. Sometimes even if you do have the money and access to a DAN! dr you still have to treat your child yourself (at $350 bucks a visit, I can't afford to leave my son in the care of his DAN!) I'll let you know what I did in the beginning. First, diet or enzymes. This can be a hard one. If you google gf/cf diet/autism you will find lots of info on how to get started and foods to watch out for. Or, you can choose to give digestive enzymes instead (I give my son Houston Nutraceuticals Enzymes with great results) Kirkman Labs is a respected and trusted place to buy supplements specifically for ASD kids. I agree with Dana that Omega 3,6, and 9 are very beneficial for our kids (I use the Kirkman Balanced Omega Combination) A good probiotic (again, I use the Kirkman Pro-Bio Gold) Just remember a probiotic works best on an empty stomach and don't give food or other supps/meds an hour before or after taking it. A good multivitamin (Kirkman has a great chewable for kids listed under " Multi vitamins " ) There....that's exactly what I got out of my first DAN! appt (see, I already saved you $350!) Get started with these things. Worry about yeast, viruses, and other issues later. Most of our kids have yeast and viral issues and Dana @ dana's view has some wonderful homeopathic remedies for all these things. But, first things first. Resist the urge to do everything all at once at start with the diet or enzymes and supps. If you have dosage questions you might want to start all supps at 1/4 the dosage recommended and work your way up. The " low and slow " method seems to work best for our kids. Hope this helped!
