Yes, when our guy was 4 we did a full-time Son-Rise program.  We saw lots of

progress, eye contact and lots of smiles, and even the beginning of words and

phrases.  We did full-time for over a year, then started part-time in

conjunction with school.  Best thing we have ever done to make an emotional

connection.

Anyone doing this program EXCLUSIVELY. Like no school, just doing son-rise

at home. Any improvements?

I volunteered in a Son-Rise program years ago when the child was 4 & 5 so not in

school yet. The mother of that child posts here only occasionally now. Yes,

there were significant improvements. They were doing a variety of dietary and

supplement things at that time and have done many other things since.

Dear Rose,

Yes, we came back from the SR Start Up Training in Feb in Sheffield and it was

an amazing experience -- we now have a full time programme up and running (for

our 3 year old) and he is absolutely blossoming, and so are we. It is labour

intensive at the beginning, but so worth it. The philosophy makes all the sense

in the world, and many of the clinical child based approaches come from their

basic principles.

Best of luck!

I love it. I jst don't have the time to carry the program full time but my son

is esily influenced by it. It makes more sense to me than ABA.

My son is 3 years old. WE work in sessions right here at home and his eye

contact and socialization increases alot. The idea is that you should bring

volunteers to your house to help with the program

After 1 1/2 years of in-home ABA with CARD paid for by our Regional Center,

we decided to terminate our sons program. Our son did make some progress with

ABA, however we felt he was stressed and frustrated every day of his life. After

trying a few of the Son-Rise techniques we realized that Son-Rise was the

direction we had to take. Within one month of removing ABA, our son made amazing

gains. Much more eye contact! Asking us " help me " , telling us " I want ______ " we

can now tell him " go get your shoes " He's now able to label and point to

things.  And much more! Non of which he was able to do with ABA! He will be

turning 4, end of June and I will be flying to Mass to take the Son-Rise week

long training and can't wait! We feel that the the Son-Rise program will help

our little guy even more when we completely understand how to run the program.

The program makes perfect sense to my husband and I and our family, but I

really think it depends on the

child because many children respond well to ABA and other therapies. I think we

as parents need to keep an open mind and not be afraid to try something new if

another therapy isn't producing the results we think it should be. We know our

children best, so we really need to go with our guts and try what we feel our

children will benefit from most. I'm glad we did, even though I lost many

nights of sleep wondering if we did the right thing by giving up ABA paid for by

the RC. We now know we made the right decision for our little boy. Good luck in

finding the perfect program for your child!

We didn't use volunteers, we ran the program ourselves.  Rotated in and out.

It did wonders for our guy,  Would do it again in a minute if he needed it.

The basic idea of Son-Rise is simple.  Consider your child an alien from

another planet who doesn't understand your language or customs.  You are an

earthling and you want this alien to consider moving here to earth.  It's your

job, as an earth ambassador, to make earth and our customs as enticing as

possible, so this alien will want to learn the language and interact with our

culture.  So at first, you join them in their activity (stimming) which means

you copy them in what they do.  You have lots of smiles and make it fun.  As

they begin to see you are joining them, they will start to watch you and make

eye contact.  When this happens, you react in a very positive, very animated

way so they " like " what they see.  Little by little, as they learn to trust

that you aren't going to try to change them, they will abandon their behaviors

and begin to interact with you.  With us it started with brief eye contact,

little smiles and blossomed from

there.  As they abandon their behaviors (a little at a time) you can introduce

play, such as building blocks, rolling a ball back and forth, puzzles, etc.  It

is a very loose play program that is absolutely driven by the child.  We loved

it, it brought our guy from alien status to earthling status.  Hope this helps

to explain it.

Do you have any advice on how to prepare? Anything you wish you would've done or

would do differently. I've only heard positive things from people who have

attended. I'm really excited! I know this will benefit our son and our family!

My only advice (besides taking comfortable clothes that you can sit on the floor

with) is to go there an try to be as honest with yourself and as transparent

with others as you can be.  Son-Rise not only helps you look at your child

differently, it encourages you to look inside of yourself and change many of

your attitudes and preconceived notions about entire life (including your child

with asd).  The more open and honest you can be with yourself and the others

there, the more you will learn and the better you will be able to accept your

child where they are now and the easier it will be to help your them be the best

they can be.

Oh, one more thing.....take lots of kleenex or hankies.  You will cry a lot (at

least I did) the first day.

Thank you ! That's really good advice and i know I need help dealing with

this. I need a new way to look at things because this autism thing can really

strip you of everything you have and you often wonder when and if life is going

to get better. The constant fight, frustration, sadness and trying to figure

things out is overwhelming. I need a new way of organizing my thoughts, so i

can be more positive and accomplish more for my little guy and hopefully start

taking better care of myself. thanks again!
