Guest guest
Thanks Dana. Thanks , yes we are just in the process of getting the results back on zinc and copper and a bunch of others including vitamins, etc. We recently found a MD near us who practices Integrative Medicine and treats autism and failure to thrive with a very open mind. He ordered a bunch of blood test and we get the results next Monday at our monthly appointment. We'll know then and I'll now know what to look for. Guest guest
Hi , I just got a copy of Dr. Amen's book on ADD have just started reading it. We're just getting started and wow is it overwhelming. I just finished Dr. McCandless' book " Children with Starving Brains " and learned a lot. I need to read it again. We found an Integrative Medicine MD hear us who happens to be a DAN doctor. My son's DAN doctor has him taking enzymes (Trienza), cod liver oil, d-ribose, probiotic (HMF Neuro), cell food, antifungal (caprylic acid), and glycine. In the three weeks that my son has following the supplement regimen he's gained just over a pound. He's now 29 pounds. We've also seen a bit of an improvement in his ability to focus and he doesn't go off into la la land as we call it very often but we have a very long way to go. My son's appetite isn't to bad. He surprises us at times and will eat a large meal by anyone's standard and then ask for desert. It seems he's plagued by some sort of a malabsorption issue. We've got our next appointment where we will get the results from the pile of blood tests that were done and I'll raise the growth hormone idea. Guest guest
Yes Talyna, we're in the process of diet changes. I've just read Elaine Gottschall's book " Breaking the Vicious Cycle " and think we'd likely benefit from the Specific Carbohydrate Diet so we are going to head down the SCD road. I've also recently read DeFelice's book " Ezymes for Autism " and need to read it again. I will most definitely look into further using enzymes as we begin to figure some of these things our. Thanks you for you advice. Guest guest
Hello, I thought I would report back what the blood work showed. It looks like my son is quite low on zinc, high on b12 and high on alkaline phosphatase. Our doctor thinks that my son is challenged by an underlying mitochondrial dysfunction problem as well as a malabsorption issue probably around zinc and some of the b vitamins so we've added zinc, b complex and a multivitamin to the growing list of supplements. My son also has a challenge with oral aversion. Someone we met briefly a few months ago had mentioned that low zinc dramatically affects taste and that their son, who also has ASD and a feeding disorder, had taken to eating because it tasted good when he was supplemented with zinc. Does anyone have any experience with this and how long does it take for zinc to positively affect taste? It'd be really nice to also help my son's progress in his feeding challenges (stuck at purees!). Thanks for everyone's input. Guest guest
Ed, Are you saying you puree all your son's food? For the longest time we struggled like crazy to get our son to eat anything in addition to pear/apple sauce. He would not eat anything solid. We puree'd meets, veggies, etc for months. We added enhansa (circumin) and worked up to 600mg/day doses and added zinc about the same time. After getting to ~300mg/day enhansa dose our son had a rough 2 weeks or so with die off, looked and acted worse than ever. But after being on the higher dose of enhansa and zinc I think around 3 weeks later he started looking better, more eye contact with us, more energy and finally started to eat foods with texture. We have not had to puree foods since March and we are so happy about that. I think you are on the right track with zinc. You might also consider the circumin supplement. For us I think the circumin killed off some bugs (we think yeast) and broke up some of the biofilm (little pods and stringy stuff came out in his diaper) and overall made him feel better and not associate food with pain. We also think vitamin A helped our son a lot too. We give him 2 drops of Mycelized vitamin A from Kirkman Labs (about 10000IU/day). It is a high dose but our son seems to need it because whenever we stop his eye stims come back in 2 days or so. The zinc probably helped stimulate his appetite as well. We gave him 40mg/night for about 2 months and then recently stopped and he just gets a general multivitamin. What b complex are you using? > > > >> >> Ed I took my son to the amen clinic in reston va. Guest guest
Hi , It would be a dream come true to have our son eat solids. That's incredible what you've figured out about your son. I see if that regimen will work for us. As for the b complex, we're using Genestra Liquid B Complex. We started using the Kirkman Zinc suppliment and the Kirkman Super Nu-Thera powder mulitivitamin as well. Where do we start with the enhansa? did you increase the zinc as well? My son weighs around 29 pounds at the moment. How do we figure out the zinc? by weight? We've been giving the zinc, multivitamin, b complex, caprylic acid, probiotic, cod liver oil, d-ribose and an enzyme at breakfast. Should we move the zinc to the bed time routine? Guest guest
Hi , Thanks for asking. We finally got some growth. My son is now 5 1/2 and weighs almost 32 pounds. We've been giving him various supplements through the guidance of his doctor as well as enzymes and his gains have been good. We are now in the process of cleaning up his diet because we can't easily get the yeast under control. He is in a senior kindergarten and seems to enjoy it most days and seems to be enjoying learning to read. But we have good days and bad days when his autistic behaviours start to rear their ugly head. We believe it's yeast. My son's doctor wants him on a GAPS or SCD diet which we all think will further address his growth issues as his gut heals. Is your son on any special diet? Guest guest
Thanks n for the encouragement. Can you advise us on the best way to start GAPS? My son has an oral feeding issue called oral aversion and currenly will only eat mashed foods. We have a vitamix so we can chop/puree just about anything. I'm just unsure how to start. Should I just rotate in meals until I've got them all on GAPS? How important are the fermented vegetables and when? We aren't doing any diet changes yet can I use the yogurt or should I avoid the dairy? My son's stool consistence isn't bad (not to say he doesn't have some gut issues somewhere) but he has a nasty systemic yeast problem that shows up way too well on a live blood cell analysis. ;( Lots of the little critters! Guest guest
, Are you saying you cannot tolerate the 24 hour fermented kefir or yogurt that is recommended by GAPS or SCD? Guest guest
I tried a different brand of circumin, and it did nothimg. It did make my belly smaller, increase my appetite,or allow me to put on weight, the three things I have always been looking for.I grew almost a foot after I turned twenty,so you do eventually catch uo.  ________________________________ From: m_jhouston333 <m_jhouston333@...> Sent: Thu, January 28, 2010 1:19:46 PM Subject: Re: Failure to thrive and ASD  Hey Ed, Thanks for the update. Our son is basically on the SCD diet. And now we are trying to go low oxalate as well. He really doesn't eat much. Our son also had a tough time eating. Mashed foods were all he would eat for a long time. I'll tell you the thing that knocked out his food aversions and oral aversions completely and dramatically was Enhansa. It is basically turmeric. We got it from Lee Silsby pharmacy on the web. You can probably read about enhansa on the message board. At first on enhansa our son got worse but all this nasty stuff started coming out in his diapers and after a few weeks his big bloated belly went away and he started eating solid foods and many more types of foods. It was really quite amazing. We haven't had to mash foods since. But.... we still have not figured out his growth issues. We still think there is a big gut link but have not found the right combination of things that will help him grow. We will look into the GAPS diet. Never heard of it. Thanks, > > > > > > > Hi Ed.
