Vitamin D Therapy

Hi,

My DAN recommended starting my two ASD kids on 5000 iu of Vitamin D3. I bought

some

from the health food store, and it's mostly organic, but it has some

preservatives in it. My

daughter took it and she did great in ABA, but other then that I haven't seen

much of a

reaction. However my son took it and by the end of the day his sensory system

went crazy.

He was sensory seeking by running into things and screamed in pain during bath

time when I

tried to wash him. He was also clenching and screaming, which he used to do

because of

artificial colorings and flavorings. I haven't seen him do this in a long

time.

This morning, however, his speech was awesome. He was using and signing a lot

of new

words. He was using words to get my attention, and other cool stuff. Does

anyone have any

experience with Vitamin D3? Could this have been a " healing regression " or was

it the

preservatives?

I ordered a more pure form of Vitamin D, and took him off the current one.

Thanks for all your help. I have learned so much from this group.

I poured clo down my children from day one. Both have been tested-one

in bottom 10% and one in bottom 25%. There is info on line about the

clo being filtered and synthetic vit added back with ratios a/d not

what is commonly thought and labels not reflecting the content of the

product. After 8 mos of 5,000iu D3 per day both of my young adult

children have not reached adequate levels yet. This is one supp I

would continue!!

My son is doing incredibly well on the exact same dose. If you suspect

fillers, continue looking for something more pure. It sounds like

things are coming alive and new sensory info not experienced

previously can be alarming/upsetting.

My son has improved with motor coordation, sensory, and a speech. He's

babbling constantly and touching everything where previously he was

aversive to touching anything. He's even independently feeling all of

the textures in his touch books when he would previously pull his hand

away when I tried to help him feel the pages. He has even developed a

sense of rhythm and is drumming not only on his drums, but on the

wall, the table, etc. If he was a typical boy, no one would call it a

" stim " , so I'm encouraging his interest by playing music and also

bought a few handrums and bongos as he prefers his hands over using

the sticks on his rim drum.

Anywhoo... it doesn't sound like a negative response to me. If you

become concerned, follow your gut and reduced dose or stop, but I

think he's responding well.

Be sure to have his levels tested. It should be 70-80 ng/ml, but some

kids with autism do well at 100 ng/ml under doctor's guidance. You can

buy a home test kit if you prefer:

Doctor McCandless is advising against using cod liver oil. Most don't

provide the proper balance between vitamins A and D, which should be

minimally 5 times as much D as A. She recommends ProDHA to cod liver

oil, and gives a separate vitamin A drop, with high dose D3. This turn

away from CLO to DHA is being echoed through the autism community and

the general public.

First, find another vitamin D supplement without all the preservatives.

Second, too-high doses of vitamin D caused massive headache here. So

if you think your son had a massive headache, try lowering his dose.

What is the recommended amount of Vit D3 for children?  I noticed the Vit D in

CLO is just Vit D.  Is that different?  Maybe we need to add in D3 as well as

the CLO we are already taking?  Any advice on that?

Thanks, Dana

Dr Mercola has an hour long lecture on his web site that explains the

difference between Vit D3 and Vit D2. He also talks about how Vit D

is so helpful in autoimmune dissorders like autism. he explains the

best ways to get Vit D and why so many of us are deficient.

Here is the link, or you can go to Dr. Mercola's awesome web site and

search for Vitamin D.

hour-vitamin-d-lecture-to-clear-up-all-your-confusion-on-this-vital-

I love Dr. Mercola.

Thanks for all your helpful information.

I am giving to my son CLO Carlston. One morning I tried it for myself

and it give me stomach pain. Do you think it might be better to five

caps instead of liquid form? Did you know that we have to keep the

CLO bootle for only 3 months after opening?

Carlson's has 700-1200iu vitamin A and only 400iu vitamin D, which is

out of balance. The ratio should be at least 5:1 (D:A). That is, there

should be at least 5 times as much D as A, or it can cause problems.

Carlson's is not unique in this imbalance. Nordic Naturals is also

well respected and is similarly out of balance.

The omega 3's are okay. DHA is higher than EPA by a bit, which is what

we want to see. EPA is great for the general community, but DHA

crosses the blood brain barrier and benefits kids with autism the most.

If you want to follow the suggestions of Dr. McCandless's (Children

with Starving Brains), here are the basics used to swap out cod liver oil:

- 5000iu D3 (or higher) all at once. All brands are find, but she

prefers the tiny ones from www.vrp.com - If you're new to them, give

them JM's pin # and get a 10% discount, 211032.

- 1 drop of Klaire's for the 1000iu of A

- For DHA she uses Nordic Naturals ProDHA (not the low-dose children's

formula)
