Guest guest
What would you all suggest is the best probiotic to give an almost 4 year old? I give her Kids Kyo-dophilus. Is this a good one or is there a better one out there? Also do you give it with food, before or after or at bedtime. I have heard different things from different people. I usually give it with food b/c that is what I hear the most. Thank you! Angie Re: Toddler Has Bad Gas and Cramping on Oxy Powder My son weighs 78 lbs. and we give him 1500 Vit C/day and one Kirkman Buffered Magensium Glycinate cap/day. He also get other forms of magnesium in his multi vit. We give him just enough to keep motility, but not soft/loose stools. Once you see loose/too soft stools, back off a bit on dosage of both. My son was GF/CF for 10 mos and was still constipated. Not until I started digestive enzymes, probiotics in AM/PM, Gastro Support and Biocidin did his constipation go away. If I back off on any of these, it will return. > > > > > > > > > > > > We had this problem. Mylicon helped (we were in a pinch.) > > > > It does go away. The probiotics then have all night to do their thing without interruption. First thing in the morning also works well for us. I like to give them on an empty stomach so they are more likely to make it through the stomach when it isn't full of acid. -Sierra
Guest guest
Sierra,  What probiotics do you use? Are they in pill form? Where do you get them?  Also thanks loads for the encouragement about my son a couple of weeks ago. They did the colonoscopy and endoscopy; looking for crohns or ulcerative colitis. They found several " hot spots " of irritation or inflammation. The doc thinks the bleeding is coming from these, when he gets constipated. Wants him to take Miralax 2x a day. Seems a lot to me. When he took it before, he had no bowel control. Since there is no crohn's, it is evident that he needs a change in diet and something to heal these ulcer prone places in his intestinal tract. I have read a lot on here about diet and we have tried the gluten free a couple of times, but to no avail.  Once again I find myself at square one. I give probiotics in the mornings in pureed pears. My son is the one who only eats kfc strips in any substantial amounts. Is that the culprit here? He self limited milk years ago, even gags if he looks at it in a glass. He eats about 5 other foods, none of which are nutritionally complete. I am looking into the scd diet but it seems that if gfcf has been a failure, how can I succeed with this one.  Every afternoon he has a complete meltdown. After he has prevacid and an antispasm med. he calms down. I also give trienza before that mid-day meal of strips. Could it be the enzyme or the spices in the strips? Would that small amount of gluten and casein cause this severe of a reaction?  D. Guest guest
KFC strips are chock full of gluten. The coating has flour in it. And yes, even a tiny amount can cause EPIC meltdowns. My son was going to a centre for his autism intervention, and I couldn't figure out why he was getting worse until I followed him around one day and noticed that one of the other kids was eating goldfish crackers, then running to a particular toy, then back to the crackers. The toys were contaminated with gluten. As soon as I got him out of the centre, the meltdowns stopped. I had his AI bring toys with her, clean. No problem. One day a new therapist brought toys that hadn't been run through the dishwasher first. He banged his head and melted down all evening. Wasn't back to himself for days. Guest guest
, My son got better when I removed dairy but in turn became worse when I removed gluten due to a rice allergy. We were using all these rice substitutes. He became skinnier with the starving African belly, no formed stool, less language, more visual stims, no eye contact. All that despite Nystatin, probiotics, vitamins, etc. I think overdoing the rice caused an allergy and the carbohydrates were feeding his runaway yeast problem. He got better when we removed rice, but he really got better after a secretin infusion. Then we discovered enzymes. He did well with peptidase, no-phenol, and a DPPIV combination. He has never responded well to probiotics. I don't give them, because they only give him gas and make him act silly. He no longer has the distended belly and his bowel movements are formed. He never complains with abdominal pain, but I sometimes wonder if he feels pain and connects it to the source. (He is considered an aspie now at school, initially he was severely autistic. School doesn't really understand that you don't qualify for Asperger syndrome if you were initially straight autism, but he gains nothing from me correcting them so I just roll with it.) My son did not tolerate corn because of improper carotene conversion issues. He also tolerated nothing orange or green, and many reds and yellows. I corrected his carotene conversion problem with zinc, vitamin C, selenium, tyrosine, and iodine. My son also needed mito cocktail to correct his mitochondrial dysfunction, which caused him to not be able to properly digest fats. I wrote about that here http://www.danasview.net/yeast.htm Both of those issues, and also yeast overgrowth, caused the " bloated belly " syndrome and the other GI issues here. Guest guest
Hi Jen, > He got better when we removed rice, but he really got better after a secretin infusion. How did you discover that your son needs secretin. Did he have problems with his pancreas? Was his stool pH too low? My son also has a bloated belly (he got it on the 5th day after his birth) but he didn & #8217;t have abdominal pain till he got antibiotics (penicillin group). I removed potatoes and rice from his diet 2 weeks ago because a stool test showed he has klebsiella pneumoniae. He almost has no abdominal pain since then but his belly doesn & #8217;t change. Guest guest
What about making raw foods like sourcrout (sorry for the spelling). Or raw milk yogurt or kefir? I think getting probiotics through food can be more beneficial for a sensitive gut. Even coconut milk kefir can help. Guest guest
At the time secretin was a new thing. My son had all the same GI symptoms that (forget his last name) had. He was the child on Dateline that had the breakthrough. We really didn't know that he would be a big responder, but GFCF wasn't working, and there was little else to try. He also had klebsiella pneumoniae in his CDSA, along with other bacteria, yeast, and no good bacteria. We knew he was responding well when he stopped grimacing, sideways glancing, and walking with a head tilt. He also potty trained, made eye contact, spoke in short sentences, seemed happier, and played appropriately with toys. Repeat infusions were not as dramatic as that first one, and after three I thought they were agitating him and I stopped. The first infusion was porcine secretin, and the company that made it stopped producing it because they were not happy with the off label use. I think the secretin that is produced now is synthetic. I think that it was not well understood why some kids responded and some didn't. There are other ways of mimicking a secretin infusion without having it done. I'm not the most knowledgeable, perhaps some other group members can explain this? > > > > > > , > > My son got better when I removed dairy but in turn became worse when I removed gluten due to a rice allergy. Guest guest
I have found between the fish oil, doing away with casein, and the MB12 in that order,my autism has improved as much as it is ever going to.My problem is the severe GI symptoms. The belly (really obvious since I was born with no abdominal muscles),the pain, the malabsorption, the odd BMs.I am on the best probiotics and enzymes you can get,and they are only a band aid.I am looking at immune modulating drugs for inflammatory bowel disease. Most are out of the question, because my immune problems are too bad for steroids,et al,and I have severe methylation/folinic acid problems.
