He might not be able to properly digest and/or absorb fats. You can try a high-lipase enzyme, which works for some kids but not all. My son needed mito cocktail before he could absorb fats. I wrote about it here http://www.danasview.net/mar05.htm >>He has severe inflammation and is in pain due to giving him too much OLE and Enzymes. We were trying to address wetting accidents that I thought was bacteria related. OLE will address bacteria and viruses. Therefore, it will tend to increase yeast. And yeast overgrowth will tend to cause wetting accidents. > Are there any dietary interventions that help with fat absorption? Given this info, I would start with yeast control and carnitine first. > I have been giving him baking soda and Epsom salt baths. Will this help with the liver? Somewhat. I used milk thistle and taurine for liver support. > Do you have any ideas for the inflammation? Quercetin can help with inflammation. Guest guest
Melinda, Hi fellow GAPSer! We have done some stuff with fat absorption in our family, all of which has involved supplements. If you are wanting ot avoid that, have you thought about trying to cut back on fat in GAPS? I know the fat in GAPS is meant to be good, but we all need to personalize the diet to make it work for us. Do acidic things hurt your son's stomach? The only food things that I can think of to hep would be acids, such as lemon juice or vinegar. Since you mention pale stools, the first supplement that I would think about is taurine (this is part of the mito cocktail for us, it increases bile production). Are you sure that your son's pain is stomach pain and not associated with the gallbladder or pancreas? I have heard of young kids having their gallbladder out- I'm not advocating that, just mentioning that it actually can be a problem for our kids. I know you are wary of supplements, but maybe it would be worth trying a very small amount of carnitine or taurine? If it does turn out that your son has high oxalates, that would explain lot. What about trying to eat lower oxalate until you find out? I really hope you find something that works soon! -Sierra > > Dana, Since being on GAPS my son's stools are pale. This program is high on fat. He has severe inflammation and is in pain due to giving him too much OLE and Enzymes. We were trying to address wetting accidents that I thought was bacteria related. We suspect high oxalates and are waiting for the OAT to come back. I ended up dropping all supplements because he was in too much pain and I can't tell what anything is doing. If it is liver stress, I would rather not try herbs. It could be improper fat digestion. I am familiar with the mito cocktail. His sister is on carnitine, creatine, coq-10 and sublingual MB12. I would like to hold off on adding these things as well. > > Are there any dietary interventions that help with fat absorption?
