It may be zinc deficiency. Try ionic zinc (E-Lyte), for better absorption.

The maximum dose of zinc for an adult is 50mg a day for three months then drop

it to 25mg.  As for children, I have always been told 25mg a day.  You might

want to check with your doctor because it also depends on the age of your child.

I have been told by our doctor that the dosage of zinc is child's weight in

pounds + 20mg.  So for my 34 pound boys, I give 60 mg of zinc.

I was informed by our health store gal, info in health magazine and our doc that

anything over 50mg can be toxic.  Just my opinion.  Double check with your doc.

Too much zinc is toxic.  I would keep below 20 mg a day per previous research

reading material from Dr. Amy Yosko.

I hope this help!

  • 2 weeks later...

My daughter chews on everything too......I have been giving her zinc for over a

year and it hasn't helped at all.  I just recently found out it is best to

administer zinc away from calcium (something I was NOT doing :().

Any other tips for administering zinc?  How long until it's in her system and

how long until it helps with chewing/mouthing?

Any thoughts as to why she is chewing are welcome!

I had the same problem with my son, the constant chewing, when we gave him the

zinc 15 mg it stopped but then after about four months it started up again, so I

talked to his doctor and we did some blood work to check the copper and zinc

ratio and of course the copper was high and the zinc was low so I started giving

him 30mg of zinc in the evening, I read somewhere that it is better in the

evening (and on an empty stomach) I don't do the zinc on an empty stomach

though, too hard on his little tummy. after two days of the increased zinc the

chewing stopped. I also give him a liquid zinc in the am and pm 1/2 teaspoon.

I have read some other people mention that the chewing can also be yeast, I

think it was Dana.
