Guest guest
Let's not forget poor nutrition. My wife, 2 daughters and oldest son were all prescribed prozac, celexa, paxil and paxil/effexor for supposed depression and anxiety. After Corey's bad reaction to paxil withdrawal and then high dose of effexor, we found out with Dr. Ann 's help that they were hypoglycemic. They all recovered from the drugs and also depression and anxiety. I helped them safely withdraw off these damn drugs. A great article you may have seen is http://www.alternativementalhealth.com/articles/hypoglycemia.htm This explains hypoglycemias role. Watch for the documentary, " The drugging of our children " . It will be first shown at film festivals this fall. I hope it causes a stir. Guest guest
I just started using lithium orotate again and it seems to have evened out my 10 yr old son's temperament. It also helped curve his incessant thoughts and talking about Bionicles. We used the brand Monolith and I believe I purchased at vitacost.com. One pill in the am and one in the pm. From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of The Sweet Attack Sent: Thursday, April 09, 2009 12:23 PM Subject: childhood depression Looking for advice, My 9yr old son has had to see too much medically due to our daughter's health emergencies and many trips to the ER. He has major anxiety and depression issues, He also is on the GFCF diet. WE just came from the psychiatrist, where he had his first breakdown in the office. It tore my heart out, he is afraid of so much, and internalizes everything to the point of seveve depression. They want to put him on meds, which without going into specifics, we are honestly considering it due to what is happening at home and at school. But is there any supplements or homeipathic for depression. Jen
Guest guest
Hi, My daughter has the same problem. Watched her brother have an anaphylactic shock reaction and go into the ambulance. Among many other health issues she has seen him face, along with being a big sister that wants a normal brother. Not one she is afraid of. It does break your heart.I hear you. We tried 5 HTP with her, and after about 2 weeks, upping the dose gradually, she walked over to me and said " I'm happy today! " . I couldn't ahve heard more joyous words! She is on 150 mg a day, divided in three doses. Also, melatonin helped a lot with her sleep cycles, she is 2 mg a night. Her pediatrician is also very skilled in homeop[athy, and Ignatia Mara helped her through tremendous grief over our dog that we put down. It was like over night she could talk about it without crying. The strength is only from a practitioner though(I think), it was 1M. Please consider all this before meds. Meds for depression are so terribly hard to come off of if they don't work. Hope this helps, Susi > > Looking for advice, > > My 9yr old son has had to see too much medically due to our daughter's health emergencies and many trips to the ER. Guest guest
Jen First I would get him on a good fish oil supplement. Fish oil contains essential fatty acids that our bodies cannot produce on their own therefore we need to get them from food or supplements. There've been several studies done with EFA's on autistic, ADHD, ADD and depressed children and adults and it has shown great improvements. Studies have shown that fish oil supplements can actually replace depression medication. It will take a month or two to see improvements but I can tell you first hand it does work. Everyone should be taking it in my opinion. ~ > > Looking for advice, > > My 9yr old son has had to see too much medically due to our daughter's health emergencies and many trips to the ER. Guest guest
Jen, How much epa & dha are in it per serving? I would try switching to something with a higher epa/dha. Can your children swallow capsules? We take Country Life Omega 3 Mood which has 1000mg epa & 250mg dha per 2 capsules but there are several quality products out there such as Nordic Naturals and they have several liquid products available. It may or may not help but I would not discontinue the fish oil supplement. Guest guest
You could try Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Lemon liquid EPA 825 Mg DHA 550 Mg or Carlson Very Finest Fish Oil Omega-3 Lemon liquid EPA 800 mg DHA 500 mg both have good reviews, Carlson is cheaper. Try Swansonsvitamins.com, Vitacost.com or Vitaminshoppe.com for prices. ~ > >>>But is there any supplements or homeipathic for depression. > > > > > > For one of my kids, B vitamins, fish oil, and yeast control. > > > > Dana > > > > > > > > > > ------------------------------------ > > > >
Guest guest
You've gotten some great suggestions so far, such as fish oil. It may be more complicated though and may need other things in adition to the CLO to really get at the problem. First, because your daughter has so many issues, he probably has some biochemical ones too. You might consider having him checked for Pyrroluria (urine test) and have his blood histamine levels checked. Anxiety in particular is often a histamine thing, and histamine is produced as a metabolite of many bad bacteria. If either of these is abnormal it can cause depression, especially depression that seems linked to difficulty coping with stress. My older son (NT) has some similar problems and they are clearing up very well on the GAPS diet (which is like SCD), which is very good at getting gut dysbiosis resolved. If you read Gut and Psychology Syndrome, the author goes into great detail about how abnormal gut flora can cause all sorts of mood, emotional issues (this includes yeast and bacteria). While the diet is helping with so many things, the biggest benefit to the whole family is greatly improved emotional regulati0on and health. There are also a lot of homeopathic things for this. This does seem to be an area where many people see benefits from homeopathy, and it can't hurt. I would find an experienced practitioner to help with this instead of just trying things from the HFS. If it is high histamine, which it sounds like, there are also some supplements that can help. In particular, SAM-e is good because it flushes out histamine. You would start with 200mg once a day, then go to twice a day, then if he needs more, 400mg once a day then twice a day. Don't go higher than that. It needs to be on an empty stomach. Oh, also, there seems to be some evidence that viruses can be linked to depression. ST JOhn's WOrt is a powerful anti0viral and also contains seratonin, and I've seen studies where it was more effective then Rx antidepressants. You should also now that it came out recently that drug companies suppressed findings that Rx antidepressants often stop working after two years. Also, studies have not consistently shown Rx antidepressants to be more effective than placebo (for example, Prozac is effective 41% of time, but placebo effect for antidepressants is 40%- higher than usual 30%). Of course, you will do what you need to do to help your son, and maybe medication is it, but it is not the safest, most effective, long-term solution out there by far. -Sierra > > Looking for advice, > > My 9yr old son has had to see too much medically due to our daughter's health emergencies and many trips to the ER. Guest guest
Great question -- there are a lot of natural things you can give your son for anxiety and depression - I know, because I am on some of them. And I had to control my anxiety and depression - mine showed in the form of anger and basically a nervous breakdown I was on antidepressents for about nine months and then finally weened myself off and I am now feeling awesome! The antidepressents work and can be a life saver for people, but there are so so many side effects. No side effects for the naturals and here they are: 5htp trytophan sam-e magnesium/calcium I have to tell you the tryptophan has worked wonders for me. I sleep like a baby. It is an amino acid. Buy it from a good, safe source. You can get it on-line. You will hear about a scare in the 80s or 70s where some people died from the supplement, but it was some guy who admitted to putting something in his supply. That is why I said buy from a reputable source. I tried 5 htp and it didn't work as well for me. My symptoms were very severe and are now controlled. Guest guest
thankyou for all your suggestions, our issue is he cannot swallow capsules/pills yet. he has a very bad gag reflux, as well as taste/texture issue so I have to be able to get them in him, which is always the problem.... We have a Dan that we use for my daughter, and use many homeopathic products--WE use GSE, biotin, and heavy probiotics for yeast, and monthly use black walnut hull for parasites, so yes we understand what you are saying about some of the other things. We just wanted to see what anyone else was dealing with and what else they used. thanks for the tips. Jen Re: childhood depression > You've gotten some great suggestions so far, such as fish oil. Guest guest
> > Which fish oil to you recommend. WE are doing heavy probiotics therelac, > but he cannot swallow capsules yet, has strong gag reflux. In my experience, none of the fish oils taste " good " , some are tolerable. My #3 has a strong gag reflex, and I taught him that he had a choice, either eat the fish oil and taste it [i mixed things into peanut butter and honey] or swallow capsules. He chose the mixture for some things, and the capsules for others. Today he uses capsules all the time. Dana
