Guest guest
usually waking up with melatonin means too much melatonin. try .25 mg, see how she does. was she much of a night waker before? that can be gut issues, yeast (wakes up giggly/manic), good old worms(wakes up squirmy and a little mean), ears (wakes up fidgety, fussy alittle mean) otherwise i would try alittle less melatonin. Im glad its helping with falling asleep though, that can be so hard. take care, Libby problems with melatonin.. Hello everyone, I havent posted in a long time , but i am at a loss with a problem my daughter is having, she is 4 and ASD , recently she has been crying alot , especially at night when it's time to go to bed, and this can go on up to an hour and we were then having a hard time getting her up in the morning for school, anyways the Dev. Ped. suggested Melatonin because of the ADD characteristics (the go go go mode) that come with ASD , she was having a hard time with the transistion of falling asleep. So we started the Melatonin and .5 mg about 1 week ago, since then she goes to sleep fairly easily but tends to wake up around 3 or 4 for about an hour every night. So what i am wondering is , is this common? Should i up the dose? Any experiences with this would be helpful! Thanks so much! -Lucinda ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Never miss a thing. Guest guest
I'm having a similar problem with my almost 4yo dd with ASD. I'm up to 3mg of melatonin a night. Although I try to only use it on school nights. I have also tried adding 5Htp and I didn't see much improvement. I'm back to just trying the melatonin and making sure she doesn't have any supplements too close to bedtime. (Only magnesium lotion, epsom salt bath and calcium) I'm hoping this works. She seems fine getting up anywhere from 3:30 to 5am but she's wearing mommy out! I'd appreciate any suggestions from anyone too.
Guest guest
Try treating her for yeast. I know this made a big difference for my boys. They are on melatonin and 5HTP and were sleeping good most of the time but still had nights when they were waking up and would wake up pretty early in the morning too. Since I started treating for yeast issues they sleep almost 12 hrs.now without waking up. It's been wonderful and like a dream come true. I use Biotin and my boys are up to 15mg. a day. Guest guest
I didn't read your original post, but when we had problems with melatonin not helping as much, it was the other additives in the brand we were using. I try to be sure it has nothing but the melatonin and no dextrose as a filler. We also changed to a time-released melatonin. When we hit a patch where the melatonin gets my child to sleep, but she can't stay asleep, we add valerian root for a day or two and that helps. Guest guest
hi, my 3 yr old daughter is the same way. for a while there, she was waking up 3-4 times a week at around 1 am and didn't go back to sleep til 4-430. Then it was hard to wake her up at school at 8 am. To top if off, i also have a 1 year old and back a few months ago, she was still waking up 1-2x a night! We've started giving my 3 year old slow release melatonin 2.5mg every night for the past month or so per recommendation of our DAN dr. i was hesitant at first, i didn't want her body to stop making any melatonin it was making but dr reassured me that wouldn't happen. anyway, it works " most " of the time. she still gets up 1-2 times a week, may stay up for a couple of hours before she crashes. i guess 1-2x is better than 3-4x right? i'm not sure if i've helped at all? not to get off the subject, but does anyone know how to improve dark circles under eyes? not for my kids but for me. > > I'm having a similar problem with my almost 4yo dd with ASD. Guest guest
Hello, thanks for sharing.. i do have a question.. what is Htp? I wonder if it would be ok to give them the melatonin when they wake up in the middle of the night too? I have only been giving her half of the 1mg tablet and that has seemed to be ok, but maybe that's why she is waking up in the middle of the night? -Lucinda Lucinda --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Guest guest
Just wondering if you guys were adressing phenol issues....my son's night waking was due to phenols and since the reduction of fruit juices and high phenol foods he's gotten better. I also use no-fenol from Houston. There have been a few occasions where he's woken up since removing phenols, but he doesn't giggle or try to get up and play...he'll just lie in bed awake and eventually go back to sleep. > > > > I'm having a similar problem with my almost 4yo dd with ASD. This is a sign of intolerance. Can be any foods [or environmental], but phenols are common http://www.danasview.net/phenol.htm Dana
Guest guest
We tried Melatonin as well. I have learned that Melatonin only puts kids to sleep. It does not keep them asleep. I have also heard/read that when you take Melatonin it causes the body to stop making it because it gets it from another source. (Someone has already mentioned this and said that their DAN Dr said it was not true). My son also has seizures and it did increase his seizures, so be careful. I am glad I could finally help! Guest guest
jennifer, i agree with you about the melatonin. my daughter has no problems falling asleep but like last night, she was up at 1 and didn't go back to sleep until 4. i know others have mentioned it could be yeast? or phenols? but honestly, i don't know what those symptoms are for me to watch out for. my daughter is for the most part, easy going. her main problems are nonverbal (although she makes ALOT of noise, babbling, trying to repeat words on tv like on dora or blues clues)and fleeting eye contact. some days her stools are liquid, then the next could be formed. i do give her digestive enzymes mainly before lunch and supper. she is sooooo picky that she only eats like 5 things so i'm afraid to go gfcf because she is such a picky eater!! knowing her.........she'll go without food if she doesn't like it. i know i am now getting off the subject of melatonin and sleep but what juices do you give your little ones. since my daughter is only 3, she will NOT swallow pills so i release the enzymes in with her juice but she drinks apple juice watered down. from what i've read, apples are high in phenols?? so, does anyone recommend something other juice? the juice i give her says " gluten free " on the bottle. i have gse to start but didn't yet because of the age thing. says 5 and over on the bottle. we are actually seeing our " dan " dr (he's actually an allergist but apparently has treated autistic children before) and i'm hoping to have my daughter be put back on diflucan. she was on it for 2 months with some subtle improvements esp. with stools and attention but off for 2 months because of holidays and just not being able to make it back. so anyway, if anyone has any suggestions about the above, please let me know. sorry, i know this email is long! just so much to talk about!! thanks to all gina > > > > Hello everyone, > > I havent posted in a long time , but i am at a loss with a problem my > > daughter is having, she is 4 and ASD , recently she has been crying > > alot , especially at night when it's time to go to bed, and this can > > go on up to an hour and we were then having a hard time getting her up > > in the morning for school, anyways the Dev. Guest guest
I think pear juice has phenols but less than apple juice. Diluted pear juice is usually considered best. Dana
