Guest guest
It's obviously a form of stimming involving sensory issues with the mouth.I've done both, and " worse " .Some parents are OK with this, some aren't. From: kennetheriklucy <eislerfamily@...> Subject: fingers in mouth/eating dirt Date: Tuesday, September 1, 2009, 10:14 AM My 8 yr old son just recently started putting his fingers in his mouth- he has them in there all the time. He also just started, when we go to parks that have the little rocks on the ground, he sits on the ground and crams mouthfuls of rocks in his mouth, then spits them out- his lips are white with rock dust. I am assuming it's the taste, or feel of the rock dust, because he spits them out and puts more in- over and over. Any ideas?

Guest guest
My daughter puts everything in her mouth. She is 5. When you find the answer let me know. I have two possible causes though. Idea 1 The neurologist said, " Maybe her stomach hurts. Kids do peculiar things if their stomach hurts. Maybe she has acid reflux and thinks by putting something in the mouth it might help the pain. " My gastroentologist said the same thing. The gastro said, " Sometimes " an icky taste or sulfer (poopy/gassy ) taste comes up to the mouth. " I know I ate a lot during pregnancy to help with nausea. Idea 2 My daughter loves to put play dough in the mouth. The first five nurses said , " Maybe a dietary defiency like --- iodine in salt. " Sure enough my kid had iodine defiency.Did you know there is no iodine in packaged goods or fast food unless the side of the package specifically says iodized salt (like a bragging right). Subway, for example, has salt in the food but the salt is not iodized. Guess they want to save a penny or so per sandwich. This was my experience anyway with my daughter. > > > zinc deficiency.. . > > fingers in mouth/eating dirt > > My 8 yr old son just recently started putting his fingers in his mouth- he > has them in there all the time. Guest guest
Today I was doing some googling on parasites and I read something that said eating dirt was a symptom of having parasites! I can't find the site that stated that but you might want to look into it. Anyone else ever heard of that? These were yeast overgrowth symptoms here. Try increasing the yeast protocol, see if that helps. Dana

Give Black Walnut extract for parasites.
Guest guest
That's what I was thinking too. Chewing, teeth grinding, toe walking, laughing at night or at inappropriate times. All sumptoms of yeast
Guest guest
Oh, I know his yeast is up- he's been giggling like a wild man for the last 2 months. The last 3 times he was on diflucan, it didn't work for him, so my Dr. gave him a prescription for itraconizol- supposed to be in the same family as diflucan. So, $283 later, he made it half way through the bottle and I took him off becuase he wasn't showing any improvement or die-off or anything- if anything, he was giggling more. So, my Dr. gave me a precription for nystatin, and he's been on it for about a week, now. His giggling has decreaesed, he is sleeping better, and I am noticing some yeast come out in his poop. But, his fingers in mouth and sucking the dirt off of a mouthful of little rocks is the same. On Wed, Sep 2, 2009 at 8:47 AM, mercier.angie <amercier@...> wrote: > > > That's what I was thinking too. Guest guest
The parasite thing may be an issue, but I would rule out below first: Sometimes PICA (eating non-food items) is a sign for zinc deficiency. Adding some Zinc into the mix if you do not supplement it or jacking up the zinc may help. Beware that some zinc supplements contain other things such as copper, which may do more harm than good. Try to get something pure. Twinlab zinc caps work for us. You can take them out of the caps, mix them with a preferable liquid, and use a syringe. When we reward our son with a preferred food at the end, he will take the " shooter. " Also, when a child is detoxing, he/she may try to eat dirt. If you are doing anything new in that arena, even somethign as small as adding a new probiotic, activated charcoal may help. Just make sure you give it about 1 hour after the med/supp and wait at least two hours after that to give anything else or it will suck that up, too. Hang in there. You will figure it out. That is why your son is so lucky to have you! >
