Guest guest
My daughter and I both tend to need 10 hours of sleep or else we're zombies. I have no idea why that is. My son requires a certain of sleep due to sleep meds. So I'm not sure what it could be with your child. IT could be medicine related, diet related, or he might just need that much sleep. Sorry I'm not much help. I just wanted to offer some options. Has he always needed that much sleep? Could it be yeast? I know yeast in the brain causes foggyness and sluggishness. Guest guest
How old is he? I had two of my four need 13 hours a night as they moved into their teen years. I would have loved if they had slept as infants, but no....... M From: debgonzalez@... I know most of our kids have sleep issues that include not being able to sleep and think they would like too much, but boy is it getting tough with school and trying to get some quality time with him. I have tried melatonin (thinking it had something to do with quality of sleep) and he couldn't sleep through the night on it. Guest guest
He is 6. He actually didn't regress until he was 3 and that is when this sleep pattern started. I know what you mean. My oldest kids went through that adolescent sleep thing. ;0) deb On Feb 17, 2010, at 4:03 PM, Miriam s wrote: > > > > How old is he? Guest guest
Thank you for responding. I have been at such a loss and it seems this is a little uncommon in our community. The truth is he never had this issue until he regressed at age 3. Then it (and everything else) immediately began. We have seen so much progress (One therapist is even asking for him to be re-evaluated to see if he should be moved into PDD diagnosis) but this issue remains unchanged. > > My daughter and I both tend to need 10 hours of sleep or else we're zombies. Guest guest
I too have a son, age 4 now, that needs at least 12 hours sleep a night. It is almost like clockwork - whatever time we put him to beds at night, he wakes at the same time in the morning. When he was an infant and toddler, he used to take super long naps AND still sleep 12 hours or so at night. I want to say that him moving around all day long makes him need the sleep, but when he is sick and still all day, he sleeps even more. I am at a loss as well, but have enjoyed it for the moment as I have 3 other kids now. I already know it wil be an issue in the fall when he starts all day pre-school and leaves in the a.m. instead of afternoon. Yikes! I too would like to know what causes it, since my the others I know have opposite problems with their kids with autism. ??? Guest guest
Really, there are a lot of possibilities for this. Just wanted to let you know that my son slept a lot, too, and it was to the minute, total clockwork. I don't recall if it " got worse " at some point. But, by age 3, I noticed that he needed more than other kids. Mine is ASD spectrum, Aspie-ish, not outright autism. Mine also went into a 6-week sleep funk at age 4 (like mono, but wasn't mono), and then it happened again twice this past year (age 11) for a week at a time. On the first occurence, the weekly blood work said only that it was a standard virus and that he should have been able to fight it. After six weeks of 18 hours/day of sleep, I took matters into my own hands and went holistic. I gave him Essiac tea (Flor*Essence) and he came out of it with a nice fever and nearly normal sleep (for him) over a 2 day period. I kept with the tea for another 2 weeks, went to see a holistic MD 2 weeks later, and he gave him more herbals, said to take him OFF all dairy, buy a juicer and get more enzymes into him, eat more raw foods (raw carrots) etc. His sleep got better than normal (only about a half hour less than normal) ... so at age 5 he slept 11.5 hours instead of the normal 12. Last year, at age 11, he was sleeping 10 hours/night when well. But, after a week of another sleep funk he ended up getting an x-ray of his gut after his 3rd sleep funk and found he was completely backed up all the way with crapola. Doc said it was the worst case he'd ever seen. He said use Miralax (regular pediatrician). Now, he's off of Miralax and I've got him on lots of supplements. He's able to sleep less, has more energy. Could be because he's been de-toxed. Could be because of the 5K iu's of Vit D3 per day (makes ya peppy). Or, could be the Coromega or yeast coming down. Adrenals better? Beats me. Keep at it. If your gut intuition says you have a problem, then follow it. For what it's worth, my son's first pediatrician (as a baby/toddler/preschooler, before we moved) said that his " sensory " kids tended to sleep more. Like they are overstimulated? Dunno. My son definitely had major sensory stuff when he was smaller, but I didn't see the occupational therapy change the sleep. It did change his small motor skills and socialization and some large motor, but not the sleep.
