Guest guest
Hi, I have never heard of Clonus but I wanted to tell you that I experienced some MS-like symptoms last year that got pretty bad. Coincidentally enough, this occurred at the same time my son was regressing from 12 to 18 months.. Anyway I had a lot of numbness in my hands, face, legs and feet. I also saw a neurologist which was a waste of time/money. Went through MRIs, etc. When I started eating the same GFCF/SCD diet as my son and treated yeast with periodic diflucan the numbness feelings gradually went away. And I have never been back to the neurologist. Does your son have other symptoms? GI issues? I don't mean to say you shouldn't see the neurologist but just wanted to share my experience. I also think my son was having some tiggling/numbness which was causing some motor delays with him... not sure though because he can't really tell me what he is experiencing. When testing my 7 yr. olds reflexes in his foot, The Dr. said he may have clonus in his left foot. Not sure if I have the wording right. We have an appt. with a Neurologist in April. Thank you. Guest guest
Thanks for your response. My son is non-verbal, so he can't tell me either. I have him on a threelac and biotin every a.m. to treat yeast for approx. 1 1/2 yrs. He is also on Natural Calm Magnesium in the a.m. to help bowel issues. I give him NCD 2 x per day. What enzymes do you use for your son? And did that help with you and your sons symptoms? Thanks, Kelley From: Kelley <tjkan5 (DOT) com> Subject: Clonus autismncd@grou ps.com, Date: Thursday, January 29, 2009, 9:57 PM Has anyone heard of clonus with their autistic children? Guest guest
Enzymes did help. We use Similase. We get it from the doctor we have been seeing. However, we also use a brand we get from Whole Foods but I can't remember the name so I will email you the name later today. We are going to try and use one of the enzymes from Houston Labs soon for our son maybe Zyme Prime. For my son the best improvements so far came with removing complex carbs of all types (he was drinking rice milk while GFCF), reducing the amount of high phenol foods, cod-liver oil (1 to 2 tsp/day), lots of probiotics and Diflucan. Also, one round of Flagyl seemed to help. Vitamins also helped a lot. We give him vitamins and minerals from Brainchild nutritionals. Does your son have GI issues? Mysterious rahses? Puffy eyes? Guest guest
" Clonus " may also refer to the 1979 film Parts: The Clonus Horror<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parts:_The_Clonus_Horror>. Clonus (from the Greek for " violent, confused motion " ) is a series of involuntary muscular contractions<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscular_contraction> due to sudden stretching of the muscle. Clonus is a sign of certain neurological<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurological> conditions, and is particularly associated with upper motor neuron<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upper_motor_neuron> lesions<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesion> such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amyotrophic_lateral_sclerosis> (ALS), stroke<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stroke>, multiple sclerosis<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_sclerosis>, spinal cord damage<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinal_cord> and hepatic encephalopathy. Unlike the small, spontaneous twitching known as fasciculations<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasciculation> (usually caused by lower motor neuron<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lower_motor_neuron> pathology), clonus causes large motions that are usually initiated by a reflex<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reflex>. Clonus is most common in the ankles<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ankle>, where it is tested by rapidly flexing the foot upward (dorsiflexion). It can also be tested in the knees<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knees> by rapidly pushing the patella<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patella> towards the toes. Only sustained clonus (5 beats or more) is considered abnormal. Clonus appearing after ingesting potent serotonergic drugs strongly predicts imminent serotonin toxicity (serotonin syndrome<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serotonin_syndrome>). Guest guest
He doesn't have any rashes/puffy eyes and he has irregular bowel movements which are helped with the magnesium. No food issues that I have noticed. Is the Whole Foods brand call " Wholezyme " ? Thanks again. Guest guest
I didn't notice anything. She was tapping his foot underneath with a reflex tool. The thing they tap your knee with to check the reflexes. I think I noticed it move a little less than the right. She had him try to jump on one foot and skip down the hall. I believe that all of that is how she came to the conclusion.
