Guest guest
HI I held my son back last year in the pre-k program. It was the best thing that I did! He is currently in an inclusion kindergarten class with an aide...and has done great! In order to hold him back, I had to have him classified as autistic...another thing that we did was when the pre-k day ended (at 2 pm) we moved my son over to the afternoon kindergarten class for the remainder of the school day with an aide. It helped him tremendously with a larger group. He did amazingly well. Good Luck. Carla From: krianim@... Date: Tue, 14 Apr 2009 14:08:12 +0000 Subject: Will extra year of preschool affect his IEP goals and resources Hello, My son has turned 5 and is age eligible for Kindergarten coming fall. He is currently in ECSE Autism class in Loudoun county. His teachers are considering him for Kindergarten (either K2 autism or non-cat Kindergarten). However I would like to give him one more year of preschool as I strongly feel that he is not ready socially, emotionally and his language and communication need a lot of improvement. His teachers are in the process of developing an IEP for him right now. I haven't mentioned to the school team about my intentions yet. My question is that, if I mention to them about my views, prior to the development of IEP for next year, will it affect his IEP goals and resource services for next year? Any input in this regard is greatly appreciated. Thanks Krishna
Guest guest
Krishna My experience with IEP's is that it is a group effort, parent and teachers. The teachers see things you may not and visa versa. But you may all share the same goals like writing his name and getting dressed. I remember one for us was the fire alarm, major issues with sounds. In his IEP, he would get pulled, warned, talked to, so he would not flip out totally. It was wonderful. They are there to help. In early childhood one of our major goals was eating with silverware. At age 9, we still battle it, fine gross motor skills. But things like OT will help, brushing his teeth is another, tying his shoes. IEP's change. He may make huge gains over the summer. You can call an IEP meeting any time and revisit those goals. And if you you've never had a child in school, it's hard. He may need like extra help at lunch time for instance. You just need to work together as a team. I guess I've been blessed with a lot of great people and it's been a positive experience. Good luck. Guest guest
That is the way it is supposed to be, but in reality it is not the case most of the time. It seems the school has some other agenda that has little to do with your child's needs. ESY is not provided for any children in our district whatsoever. Against the law sure, but they don't seem to care. -Undiagnosed Asperger's Syndrome Stay at home mom to 3, Wife to -6-6-02-Autism Spectrum, the light of my life Katy-11-19-03-undiagnosed genetic syndrome that includes cleft palate-Pierre Robin Sequence, scoliosis, heart defects, short stature, low muscle tone, developmental delay, oral defensiveness, g tube fed part time-working on oral feeding, slightly dysmorphic features, and my joy J.D-no issues except he is totally in love with mommy, cutest baby in the world visit my blog http://busiestmommyinamerica.blogspot.com " If you think my hands are full, you should see my heart!
