Guest guest
It's strange that at least two of you have trouble with belching. I never belch, and read somewhere that achalasia patients don't belch much! I do "gulp", which is a kind of involuntary action to try to clear the esophagus. a

Interesting, I find it is harder to belch with achalasia. I have read that increased passing of gas can be caused by achalasia. I assume that is because gas that is not belched is then passed. When I drink carbonated drinks the fizz while in my esophagus causes kind of a belch, but it is not a good burp. Jerry
Guest guest
I agree completely! The entire time I have had this I have always said " if I could just burp " and when I do I am sooo happy! I always have had little " springie " noises I call them...like a drain is plugged and then a very small air bubble comes up and then what ever is there can go down...even vomiting became a problem at one point for me, I had the " force " but the esophagas was closed so nothing happened that was scary. Guest guest
I've read this as well, but I do belch quite a bit. It seems to help food go down as well. I think it is perhaps a matter of the stage of the illness - if it gets bad enough then lower esophageal sphincter probably won't open for food or belching. > It's strange that at least two of you have trouble with belching. Guest guest
Hi Liz, responses below -----Original Message----- Hi Everyone, Because of the topic yesterday about acid reflux, I thought that I would ask this to see if anyone had any ideas. My husband belches all of the time for example he'll wake up in the middle of the night, be disoriented and then belch about 10 times and then goes back to sleep. At other times we'll be going somewhere in the car and he'll ask me where we're going, which way he needs to go when he knew where we were going 5 or 10 minutes before. He belches then he remembers. It's like the oxygen is being cut off, and once he belches he's ok until the next time. This is a daily routine for him. He's been to the gastrologist (sp.) and other doctors and they just say he's swallowing air or that he's getting older and things don't work like they used to, which I think is crazy. There's something going on inside of him I just wish that we knew how to fix it. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!!!! Liz ----------- How incredibly annoying some doctors can be. Basically he is burping because he has upper digestive gas. This can be a number of things. The pancreas releases less digestive enzymes as we age and if we are not eating a raw food diet we are not getting good dietary sources and poor digestion is the result and poor digestion means food is digesting too slowly and composting and releasing gas. Those gasses can actually effect the nervous system, which the brain is part of, and so by burping and releasing them his brain is freed from the toxic load and he is clear again. If it was me, I would be taking digestive enzymes with each meal. And if he is not inclined to do that, then you might consider mixing it in his food. Preferably the part that is not too hot, as heat destroys enzymes. Anyway, that would be the first place I would look for an answer. Food combining is another issue. Some foods are not meant to be in the stomach at the same time, like meat and carbs. meat requires and acid stomach and carbs require an alkaline stomach and so when you mix the two together your stomach juices cancel each other out and nothing gets digested well. When you are younger you can get away with this, but as you age the truth that this is not a good plan begins to be more obvious. And then there is the gall bladder and liver. If they are congested or full of stones, etc, then digestion is hampered. And, on the issue of acif reflux which can sometimes be related to this, my mother had that and it was because she was constipated. She couldn't imagine how that could be because she had a bm daily. Well, three meals a day and only one bm, meant that her bowel was slowly filling up. She had stomach pains and they diagnosed it as acid reflux due to an impacted bowel. She got cleaned out and the problem went away. Another thing can be h. pylori, a cootie that attacks the valve over the stomach and weakens it so that it doesn't close well and acid can slosh up into the esophogus. I believe one of the Liz's said her md recommended pepto bismal for that for several weeks, a few times a day. Bismuth is a metal that kills that bacteria and pepto bismal is bismuth based. And here again, food combining can make a difference. Eating protein with veges but not with carbs can really give relief. And Apples are very alkline forming in the stomach and can sooth acid stomach really well. That is fresh apples, not cooked like in store bought applesause. Once it is cooked it becomes acid forming. Hope some of this helps. Not a doctor, Donna
Guest guest
HI, I agree with Donna's response. I have candida, and when I was put on Metamucil and Milk of Magnesia by my gastrentologist ( for constipation) I belched and had gas constantly. The sugar in these products fed the candida, which in turn created intestinal gas. I was taking them three times a day. When I stopped using these products I stopped having gas and burping. ( Of course ,then my GI tract came to a crashing halt, so I guess that stopped the production of gas ) good luck Robin ( previously proverbs333) __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Jan, mucous and belching does go away after surgery - until things build up after some tome - months - years maybe - and then it may start again. Good luck with the surgery ! Joan Johannesburg South Africajpearse@... belching seems everything I drink anymore I have to belch...worst in the morning...coughing is getting better...but still have to cough hard when I do usually lots of mucus up..guess it has no place to go. My question is....If I go ahead and have surgery...will the surgery take care of these problems....nothing will still be able to move..so won't I still have a problem with the coughing and muscus problem..and the belching.Jan

Guest guest
Hi Cindi, You probably won't appreciate hearing this, but you're one of the "lucky" ones who can burp! I can't tell you how many times I have walked around waiting for the food to go down, thinking if I could burp, I'd probably be able to eat much better. I just have the gurgling throat which is very annoying. Pete, you were very funny today with your BARF comments :-) . belching Well, here's one for all of you....I rarely burped before my Heller, but now I can put my husband & son to shame! And it's only been one week! What is that about? Guest guest
better up than through!!!!!!!!!!! Cindi -- Re: belching , I do not think you are alone. I asked my surgon about it. His response was the it is from all the food mixing with the acid which causes gas. He said witht he heller i had done it keeps the value loose instead of tight. If food is passing through then the gasses are going to go out the fastest way which is up. dra ____________________________________________________ IncrediMail - Email has finally evolved - Click Here
Guest guest
My 3 year old has started having " wet " belches in past 3-4 days. She will burp and 99% of the time, she has a small amount of regurgition with it. It sounds gross, I know, but I can't get her to spit it out! She doesn't seem phased or bothered by it. I just don't know what this is. She has never had this before. I recently started her on biotin (the capsules are 500mcg but i'm only giving her 1/2 capsule) with 1/8 tsp of magnesium citrate. Could she have some type of intolerance to this?? She does not swallow pills so I have to open capsules up and put in some juice with lots of water. Is that not recommended? She also hits her chin with her hand, usually. But I'm not giving her that much biotin?? Any thoughts?? thanks a bunch!! gina
