Guest guest
I share your concern! My Aspergers daughter suffers from anxiety and OCD and worrying. She takes alot of Lexapro for the OCD -80 mg. It has done nothing to change her OCD. I also use Klonapin 10 mg -a moderate dose, for her anxieties. I wish I had some answers too! I myself in the past took St s Wort for depression and it made me physically ill! So, I don't recommend that. Lets hope Dana and/or someone on this board can make some recommendations... > > I am confused, I have a dd with autism and a dd with OCD. Guest guest
Help me...Rhonda, Okay, I'll try. Sorry, could not resist the old Beach Boys song. Anyway, for our twelve year old we use several supplements for stress. He gets Sam-e, 200mg every MWF in the am before breakfast. We also give him a steady supply of magnesium throughout the day. He usually gets about 650-700 mg in 4-5 doses. This seems to help a lot on a daily basis with baseline anxiety. If there is a daily flair-up or a high anxiety episode we use L-Theanine for straight anxiety and supplement by NOW called True Calm if there may be a bit of aggression thrown in...sometimes both together. For night time, I break a 3 mg melatonin tablet into quarters and give him one of the pieces, so actually less than 1mg. I also bought empty capsules. I have a tupperware which contains one part magnesium citrate powder to 4 parts NOW brand L-Tryptophan powder. I fill up one capsule and give it with the melatonin 1 hour before bed. If he is really stressed at night and does not fall asleep after an hour, we have Nature's way valerian/lemon balm tablets. We may use one (or two if really bad if he is not asleep after a few hours). Hope this helps, Mike ps I would also like to add we started using Culturelle every morning before breakfast. Not only is it a great probiotic, but it contains chicory root which is great for keeping him " regular " . This has also made a big difference. > > I am confused, I have a dd with autism and a dd with OCD. Guest guest
My NT son (and myself really) also have this problem. I felt that his anxiety was getting into the OCD zone, so I talked to my ASD son's doctor (not a DAN but similar), and she had all three of us tested to see what our blood histamine levels were. Normal range is up to about 70, and both my kids were around 1100 and I was at 1300, so absolutely off the charts! This condition (called histadelia) is commonly associated with anxiety, OCD tendencies, panic attacks, and about a million other things. What surprised me is that my ASD son had almost none of the symptoms and was just as high as his brother. If you look up stuff on histadelia, be aware that many people have only some of the symptoms, and may have symptoms that are considered counter-indicators. This is checked by a simple blood test (well, simple as blood tests go- I can't say drawing blood from my boys was a picnic!). I researched low-histamine diet and put us on that and it made an immediate difference. We are also doing a protocol to bascially flush the histamine out of the blood, which is lots of calcium (1200-2000 mg per day) plus as much vitamin C as your bowels will tolerate, play SAM-e, which is great for getting the histamine out of the body. I was always an anxious kid and had lots of chronic health issues for which I didn't get help (migraines, allergies, IBS and other digestive issues, anxiety and weird emotional volatility (I cry easily), low pain tolerance in some ways, very sensitive (in the sense of being a Highly Sensitive Person), etc etc. The histadelia explains so much it's almost weird. It's estimated at 25% of the ASD population (10% of the " normal " population), strongly runs in families, adn is also related to mental health issues (depression, schizophrenia and bipolar in particular I think). It also seems to predispose people to substance abuse (there is lots of alcoholism in my family). If someone is struggling with both depression and anxiety/OCD than I think it's wroth looking into it. -Sierra > > > > I am confused, I have a dd with autism and a dd with OCD. Guest guest
Thanks, that's very interesting! I have a history of depression and anxiety myself (as well as my mother, grandmother, etc... and my son has ASD). Interestingly, when I went dairy-free a year and a half ago, my anxiety disapeared, especially the physical side-effects of anxiety (heart racing, knot in the stomach, etc...). I had been suffering non-stop since I was a young child and could not believe that I finally did not have these issues anymore, at 37! I wonder if taking milk away influenced my histamines??? We did Exposure & Response Prevention Therapy with a wonderful psychologist for 7 months, which helped a little, but the Asperger's complicated him being helped with just therapy. (He's been on Zoloft 37.5 mg and Xanax .25 mg for all this time). We just started Risperadal the last two months, and it really helped a lot, but what I want to share here is INOSITOL!! It is a B vitamin and we are giving him megadoses, and it is helping a lot! Saw a dr in Boston who is helping monitor -- Greenblatt. Look him up at www.naturaladd.com. He tested our son and found very low trace minerals, and we are giving supplements and enzymes now. He is SO MUCH BETTER! But Inositol really helped his OCD.
