Guest guest
Hi, Lowis Lowry : The Giver, Gathering Blue, Messenger -- Not quite fantasy, but close enough. The Giver is an extraordinary work. Madaline Le Engle . Anything and I mean anything by this author. A Wrinkle in Time, Swiftly Turning Planet, A Wind in the Door, Endless Light. Ms. Engle is a Christian. There is the adventure, but the ideas and the need for interpersonal connections are the meaningful parts of the stories. TA Barron: Heartlight (which does a good job of quantam mechanics without ever mentioning science): The Ancient One. His Merlin series is a bit weak, at least I think so. But none of these books will truly appeal to a child who would prefer to read non-fiction. Would she tolerate the classical tales like Homer or Gilgamesh if she knew she was reading them for the " facts " any well educated individual would need? She's prefers nonfiction, so we're already at a disadvantage, but the bigger issues are that she gets upset when there's " adventure " in the usual sense for kids her age and we're a conservative Christian family so much of the " fantasy " stuff that's out there is not exactly what we want her reading. I mentioned the latter of these facts to her language arts teacher at open house last night and he said he'd work with me if I could get him some suggestions (she attends public school). Can anyone suggest appropriate titles in the Adventure and Fantasy areas for this age with these specifications? Thanks for your help. Guest guest
Can anyone suggest appropriate titles in the Adventure and Fantasy areas for this age with these specifications? Hi The Narnia series I think are good - I loved them at that age having been introduced to them by our grade 4 teacher at a Christian school. The later books (particularly) have strong biblical parallels. Good luck :-)

Guest guest
Any CS books would be good. We are in Wyoming and have a local author who wrote true stories of Native American adventures. The most popular one is Naya Nuki - Shoshoni Girl Who Ran by . He has other ones, but this is a good one for a girl. I think the reading level may be 5-6th grade??? My 5th grader likes the Magic Tree house books. Typically we stay away from " magic " , but these are pretty good. Most of the stories are about two kids that travel to a historical event or a geological place. Some of the books also have a companion book that expounds on the topic of the book. Those may be too easy for her depending on her level. I would also see if true life missionary stories or heroes of the faith would count like Corry Tamboone or others who lived a real adventure . Or you could read a Left Behind book.
