I am right there with you. Give her gum and lower stress levels around her. One

psych says these kids are highly stressed and repetitive actions are their

attempt to calm themselves.I am really starting to believe that. I am wanting a

calming vitamin/medicine. I notice being in nature helps, exercise helps, taking

a warm bath, happy music helps, not talking about them in front of them or

talking about stressful things helps, carrying heavy things, . Any other ideas to

calm a sensitive nervous system? Was your daughter born very bright and

sensitive to everything? I am also, if I am honest, a worrier.  I notice my

daughter does it more as she tires. Prayers for all these kids!  Welcome others

ideas that stress plays a very important cause in addition to others for ASD

kids. Wonder if there is an autism prayer/good thought site out there

also?

i agree with exercise, she loves happy music, taking a warm bath (we do that

frequently)

i need to get better at not talking about her around her. i try to avoid it. i

have no idea how much she understands

i think a calcium/magnesium vitamin would be good but am not sure what to give

her. i have to crush everything and add it to her rice milk in a bottle.

my son puts his hands in the mouth a lot lately and has lots of self-stimulating

behaviours, I totally understand what you're going through! we've been told it's

a luck of zinc, what I did is I just ordered this multi-vitamin/minerals wafers

that I'm hoping he'll like. I don't know if it's going to work because we

haven't received it yet! they are from Kirkman, I have faith they will help.

These were usually yeast symptoms at my house. You might also try digestive

enzymes, if you don't already use them.

Have you had a sensory assessment? My son also has focus issues and running from

room to room. Some of his issues are related to yeast, but he's also looking

for some sensory input. We've just started Sensory integration therapy to see

if that helps.

How do you get Sensory Integration Therapy. I have been trying to get that since

my son was 8 years old and have never been able to. He's had ot by 2 different

therapists and the school did a test showing that he had serious problems with

sensory issues, but it's like nobody knows what to do about it.

The SPD foundation is a good place to start. Theres a link to find OT providers

that specialize in SPD. We see a clinic in our local area that deals with SPD

and thankfully our insurance covers 100% after our deductible. They will also

work with his school on things they can implement to help.

Get the book " Raising a Sensory Smart Child " .  (can't remember the author) and

take her suggestions.  We did this and it worked wonders with our guy.  We

needed to learn how to " play in a productive way " with him.

We got ours from the library.  No use buying when you can borrow.  Also you

can look over the other books on sensory integration issues.  Only look at

books that are about 4 years old because anything older doesn't take into

account all the new information out there about our kids.

What do you use to fight yeast? Do you get a lot of negative behavioral

reactions? Which B vitamins. We have had so many setbacks here that now I ask

for details if I can get them.

My daughter was diagnosed PDD-NOS at 3 (now almost 4, significant issues since

15 months), but it's mostly Sensory Integration issues. We've been getting

Occupational Therapy for over a year now through our local Children's Hospital.

Public Schools are supposed to provide Occupational Therapy for children that

test low in sensory but usually only if it is disrupting or delaying classroom

performance, so I would definitely seek this out through your son's IEP if

you're able. It's difficult to get insurance to cover OT because most programs

cut it off for developmental delays once the kid hits school age (because of the

public school supposedly covering it).

Our daily sensory diet includes swinging & brushing stimulation, but we've been

doing it so long now that I probably work in other sensory things without

realizing it -- the books will help with that, but also an OT.

Additionally, we've found that high doses of Omega-3 EPAs (we use Nordic

Naturals EPA mostly but are currently trying their Ultimate Omega, which is less

fishy & has the same EPAs though lower ratio EPA:DHA, but more Omegas overall)

for focus & got very positive results within a week of beginning those. We've

continued to see improvement as she continues to take them.

We've also added in various probiotics recently, since many of her sensory

issues end up being apparently related to yeast overgrowth in her stool. We use

a general children's probiotic daily, but then add in Kefir, yogurt, & Houston's

AFP Chewable probiotics when she has a sensory surge.

Good luck!

This is all so interesting.

We live in Israel. I know about skin brushing and swinging. We try to

incorporate a lot of physical and motor work into her program. Can you tell me

the quantities of omega 3 you are using daily. I give her one cap of culturelle

daily. Leia always seems to have stomach issues. Do you make your own yogurt?

Thanks

Woops -- sorry, forgot about the Omegas question.

With the Nordic Natural EPAs we started Anika with we used 2 capsules, totaling

800mg EPA: 200mg DHA. The research we'd done indicated that the EPA was

essential for attention issues, so a 4:1 ratio was important. It is also

important to keep the other fats down in your child's diet so that they do not

out-compete the Omegas in his system -- so eliminate any fried foods especially.

The lower you keep the other fats, the more effective the Omegas *can* be.

Obviously, there is the possibility that this is not a deficiency for your son

in which case the high omegas will not impact his attention. However, if this

is an issue you should start to see improvement within two weeks -- likely

within 3-5 days.

I recommend this route because I know it worked for us. However, others will

swear by Cod Liver Oil because it has higher levels of Vitamins A & D, which are

also good and this may be another route for you to take if the EPAs don't seem

to help.

I put our Omegas in my daughter's Orange Juice, because citrus is supposed to

help with absorption of fish oils.

Good luck!

Must admit that I'm not very scientific on our yogurt. I've got my daughter

mostly off milk (we don't have any apparent allergies or need to go fully GF/CF

from the test round we ran), so I use basic over-the-counter soy yogurt (mostly

vanilla because she does seem to have fruit sensitivity). Honestly, haven't

seen much change from the yogurt in how she acts, but the Kefir gave us huge

improvements within just about 24 hours last time she had sensory regression --

Got the Kefir smoothies and she downed something like a quart over the course of

the day (pomegranate flavor since we're iffy on strawberries). She kept asking

for more & I gave it to her. Also was using the Houston AFP

https://www.houston-enzymes.com/store/product.php?c=1 & p=5 and Primadophilus Kids

from Nature's Way. Mostly I was just trying to hit her with as much probiotic

matter as I could to out-compete the yeast in her system without medication.

<several hours later>

Sorry, didn't realize I hadn't sent this. Goes with my EPA post I just sent.

Hi,

Thanks for all this info.

It appears the ratio I have of EPA to DHA is not 4:1

I still am not sure what is helping my daughter and what isn't.

I would think any amount of Omegas would be a good thing, but higher EPAs should

equate to better focus. Also, better quality Omegas (Norway products are

generally considered the best) that come from cleaner fish & the final product

has been well filtered for heavy metals, etc should also give you better

results.
