Hi

Can you please help me understand the whole stimming thing? I would like to

understand what it feels like and why it is done. My 5 year old daughter does

stress stims or just excitement odd stims.  What is really hard for me to

understand is the shaking things in front of the face. I've tried it several

times and it just makes feel dizzy or confuses my eyes . Very hard for me to

take bothers eyes. Can you really help me " get it " ? What causes this

biologically?

My concerns are my daughter does so much of it I worry she is not playing and

learning,,getting further behind in developmental areas. Also her play group

leader says sometimes she scares her peers with rapid stimming.

If you were a parent what would you do? Please don't be offended and I would

value your insight.

My 8 yr old son just recently started putting his fingers in his mouth- he has

them in there all the time. He also just started, when we go to parks that have

the little rocks on the ground, he sits on the ground and crams mouthfuls of

rocks in his mouth, then spits them out- his lips are white with rock dust.

I am assuming it's the taste, or feel of the rock dust, because he spits them

out and puts more in- over and over.

Any ideas?
