Guest guest
Yes! My son was in an integrate kindi class (not ASD) with severe SPD and significant developmental delays. He was two weeks before the cut-off but I knew he was just not ready for kindi and wanted him to spend a 3rd year in preschool with services that would give him the best opportunity to succeed in kindi the following year. We had to file a due process motion against the district, but he did repeat preschool with full services and is now in kindi this year. the principal and school psychologist told me again last week that we definitely made the right decision for our son. I would encourage anyone to fight to do what you know is right for your child. BTW...we did not go to court, district changed course as soon as we filed, but we did go to mediation as they wanted to cut his servics (ST, OT, spec ed teacher) I'd be happy to walk you through the process, share the info, documnts and research we used, and help in any way I can. Please email me off list directly. I have unlimited long distance so if you are in the 48 states I'd be happy to call you. Nearly EVERYONE in spec ed and advocacy told me I would not get it. Two other families I now know did not get it. I knew what my son needed and what the law said. It is the right thing to do for our kids. And if we don't fight the system it will not be changed for others. My state senator told me she would work to introduce legislation in our state that would make kindi delay as easy for spec ed kids as it is for typical kids. (which reminds me I need to follow-up on that. It was not an easy process but I don't regret one minute of the fight. And I want others to have the same opportunity as my son did to develop at his speed. denice From: krianim <krianim@...> Subject: Resource support for 5 year old in Preschool Date: Tuesday, March 24, 2009, 1:54 PM Hello, My son is 5 and is age eligible for kindergarten in the fall. He is currently in ECSE Autism class, in Loudoun county. I would like to repeat him another year in preschool but in typical setting, with full resource support everyday. Was anybody able to do this for your child? If so, could you please share your experience in this regard? Thanks Krishna ------------------------------------
Guest guest
Hi I too held my child in preschool another year...and boy what a difference it made! If your child were NT, you would have no problem holding them back - no questions asked. But because your child is in the preschool program, this is where it gets a little muddy. All I had to do was get a recommendation from our Neurodevelopmental Pediatrican...and that was it. Logan was classified as Autistic and that was enough to hold him in prek. What we did was from 9-2 (the regular prek day), Logan attended that class...then he went into the Inclusion Kindergarten class for the remainder of the day with an aide. This worked out great since there was a general ed teacher, special ed teacher, and his personal aide. By having this experience, Logan has been in the Inclusion K class this year, with an aide...and doing well. If I can be of more help, please let me know. Carla From: krianim@...
