ADHD Aggression

My 14 yr. old son has been having aggression issues that have been unresolved by

a gluten free diet, lots of different combinations of vitamins, supplements,

therapy, exercise, etc. You get the point. We had tried everything. I have been

actively searching since he was 4 but the behavior began before that.

We took him to a world famous brain clinic www.amenclinics.com where he had 2

days of brain scans and a thorough oral/written history of his life. It turns

out in addition to Asperger, ADHD, OCD, a few other issues and  according to his

scans is biggest issue is GAD (generalized anxiety disorder). Dr. Dharma

prescribed  a drug I had never heard of,Intuniv, which is a non-stimulant drug

for ADHD and especially good for children who are oppositionally defiant. My son

continues to take a low dose of Abilify (2 mg) and Lamicatal (100 2x per day).

This cocktail was the magic bullet I have been searching for.... my son says he

has more control and is begining the process of healing from the remorse and

embarrassment of his past actions. He will be returning to school. He had so

many meltdowns he wasn't able to attend school for several years.

It was great to be able to " look under the hood " to see on SPECT scans what his

needs were.

Dr. Dharma also recommended Coenzyme Q10, phosphyltital serine, B complex,

Vitamin D3 as well as yoga (for deep breathing), 30 min of cardio daily and

therapy to help him control his ANTS (automatic negative thoughts).

I realize not everyone can afford the Amen Clinic but if you can I highly

recommend it as our entire family's future has been changed by their help. It

costs around $3700 for 3 days.  Check out their website and Dr. Amen also had a

PBS program and books.

After starting Intuniv, it turns out several other teens we know are on it and

it seems to work great for them also.

People have told me for years that there is no magic bullet and just to accept

my son the way he was. I saw him suffering and couldn't stop searching. He is

soooo happy now. Keep searching for your children.
