Why do we have to take so many digestive enzymes?

My 3yo daughter and I have celiac disease and a host of bowel

problems. We have been on the " no food diet " for about a year. I

just finished reading " Enzymes: Go With Your Gut " and decided to try

enzyme therapy. We started on a low protease product good for

vegetarians (which we are) from Integrative Theraputics and didn't

see any improvement until I was taking 7 capsules with all meals and

snacks. My daughter saw improvement at 3 with all meals and snacks.

We didn't have any adverse reactions and were able to eat things we

hadn't eaten in a long, long time (except gluten), provided we had

enough enzymes. After blowing through the first bottle of enzymes I

switched to Enzymedica's Digest Gold and found that with 8 capsules

with all meals and snacks we have no symptoms of gastric problems

whatsoever.

I'm going to start adding in ViraStop between meals, but I'm

confused about what to do with the enzymes taken with food. While

I'm thrilled to be getting better, I realize that this is a lot of

enzymes to be taking just to digest my food. Is anyone else taking

this high of a dose? Does anyone have any experience with

Integrative Theraputics? They are significantly less expensive than

Enzymedica. It would cost me just under $700 a month for my

daughter and I to take Digest Gold and Virastop at theraputic doses,

which does not include supplements for zinc, magnesium, and

probiotics, which will easily run us another $60 Anyone else in a

smiliar predicament?

We're not celiac, so we don't need the amount of enzymes you apparently do.

DeFelice would be the best resource I can think of to answer your

questions. She'll probably respond to you very soon.

Good luck!
