Guest guest
My son's outbursts are definitely triggered by intestinal discomfort. Right now we are giving him: about 800 mg of Calcium 700-800mg of magnesium 1000mcg Biotin Vitalzyme 3 times a day Vitaman C 1000mg S. Boulardii and Klaire Vital 10 on an empty stomach in the am. Vitamin B Complex in the am 250 mg of b6 in the am at bedtime I am giving him 3 mg of Melatonin and 2 mg of time released melatonin. This may be overkill because he is getting up in the middle of the night, but I did not know what else to do. For the first 3 days is was great, no behaviors and several sizable bowel movements. Well today, Sunday, he is having issues again. A lot of straining in the bathroom. His stool are green, tar like and smelly. Should I " up " something? I have been giving him much more water here at home than they give him at school I know apples have phenol and we have cut back to an apple a day (he used to eat 3-4). After reading this board I realized apples could be a problem. Sorry for the random thoughts, I am still learning. Thanks, Ellen
Guest guest
Constipation would mean he needs more magnesium. My nutritionist says to give a lot more magnesium than calcium and also on the amount to give - he says to give a high amount until you see diahrea and then back off by 500mgs. and that is how you will know the right amount for that person. For the night wakings I would suggest raising the dose of biotin until you see results of that not happening because that sounds like yeast to me. I am giving my kids melatonin and they were also waking up at night (even with 5HTP) so I raised their biotin and now they sleep right through. Biotin can also be constipating so I would suggest starting the magnesium protocal first and get his bowels moving and see if that might also help the sleep. It could be a factor. If it doesn't help with the sleep then raise the biotin. HTH's Sleep is better, behavior is back... My son's outbursts are definitely triggered by intestinal discomfort. Guest guest
I will follow your advice on the magnesium. When he goes into the bathroom I can here him grunting and straining; often with little success. Not to be " gross " , but it reminds me of squeezing very thick dough through a small nozzle. I did not know the biotin would help with sleep? We may back off a bit on the melatonin tonight because there is no school and we can afford for him to stay up latter. The thing is, the last few nights he has fallen asleep within 45 of giving the melatonin. He may even be falling asleep without it. I just hate to stop and go back to 3am bedtimes. Guest guest
I agree -- more magnesium, less calcium. My son's magnesium/calcium ratio is 600mg mag 100mg calcium right now -- and that works for him. Don't go by the norm of 2-1 ca to mag ratio --IMO it's a 1-1 ratio max for most spectrum kids. > > I will follow your advice on the magnesium. Guest guest
Wow, so you give 6x's more magnesium than calcium? I guess all this time I thought the 2-1 ca/mag ratio was the way to go. Should I cut back on the calcium from the 800mg he is getting now? That would definitely help the ratio in favor of the magnesium Thanks! Ellen > > I agree -- more magnesium, less calcium. Guest guest
sometimes sleep issues can be related to yeast and that is why the biotin helps. Re: Sleep is better, behavior is back...
