We've been using melatonin off and on in our household for over 5 yrs.

It's been a lifesaver to my Bipolar son w/ extreme anxieties. I myself have

also taken it sporaticaly and notice that it DOES cause you to wake up, I

mean WIDE awake approx. 5 hours after taking it. It also causes bizarre

dreaming for both me and my son. We continue to use it as I feel it's the best

choice for our situation however I do dislike the downside of middle of the

night waking.

For the night waking, try a time release Melatonin. I believe Natrol makes one.

I've heard that when Melatonin isn't enough, you can add Magnesium at bedtime

via 1/2 cup epsom salt in the bath but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

My almost 9 yr old daughter (CP due to stroke and Aspergers) has been taking 1mg

Melatonin for probably close to 7 yrs now. It has been a lifesaver: without it,

it can take her 1.5-2hrs to fall asleep, with it she is asleep within 20-30 min.

I've tried increasing her dose to 2mg when she's had trouble staying asleep, but

it didn't have any effect so I went back to 1mg. I probably *should* put her on

the time release, I've just always ordered the regular.

This happens with me if I take too much. I lowered my dose and it helped this.

I am taking 1.5mg occasionally. My son needs 3 mg.

Have you tried GABA (in addition to Melatonin)?? It has worked wonders here!
