Maggie-

You had a much better experience than I did. After much discussion

with the teacher, school nurse, and principal, I was still unable to

get them to cooperate with the request. I even had a doctor's note

and still nothing but trouble. The only thing I gained from this

experience was the knowledge that they completely question my

integrity and my ability to safely parent my child. Okay here we go!

Even after it was agreed that I would come in to give him his enzymes

before lunch, and I did so without issue, they refused to give him

his juice from home. Instead they gave him apple juice and we paid

the price all weekend long (extremely sensitive to phenols). It is

clearly written in his IEP that he is to only eat food and drinks

provided from home. When I brought this to their attention (again,

but politely) I was told that they would not give him his juice

because they were concerned that I put enzymes in it. Mind you the

same teacher who uttered these words saw me come in and give him his

juice. I was so hurt and insulted. I may be a little untraditional

in my medical practice but damnit I have honor. When I say I am

going to do something, I do it. I do not sneak around and

deliberately try to deceive others!

I was nothing but professional and polite when I requested Jack take

his enzymes at school. When I finally met with the nurse felt like

we really had a great discussion. I left her office fully realizing

that I would have to give the enzymes myself, and I was fine with

that. I never thought that my integrity would be questioned or that

they would look at me as a parent who would endanger her son with

questionable medications. When I confronted the nurse about the

issue of my integrity (again politely), I am told that I am being

too sensitive and they have to protect the rest of the children in

the classroom from exposure to " these enzymes " , and that they never

questioned my integrity. But, in the same conversation the nurse

made me promise not to put enzymes in his lunch thermos! It was

completely offensive! I am involved in the school, attend all

functions, and this is the treatment that I receive? This situation

was so unwarranted and hurtful. I should have just put the damn

things in his lunch thermos and never told them! But NO, I had to

follow the friggin' rules! If I would have hid them in his drink I

would at least still have some respect for the staff at his school.

This has been a hard couple of weeks for me. I need to stop worrying

about what others think about me. When it is all said and done,

their opinions don't mean squat. The only thing that matters is my

son. He is 4 yo and AWESOME!!

Lessons Learned

Life Lesson 156 : All " traditional " medical and educational staff

think biomedical mothers are complete nutcases that will give their

sick child anything to try to heal them. Silly Mercury Mom, don't

you know your child will never get better??

Life Lesson 157: The mantra, " you get more bees with honey " only

applies if your are a traditional parent, who follows traditional

medicine, and would not even dream of questioning the school about

Least Restrictive Environment. If they assume your crazy then by all

means, don't let them down, go NUTS! Don't stop till you get a police

escort out of the building!! (Just wishful thinking, my husband has

political aspirations and I need his paycheck for DAN doctors and

therapy!) :)

When I explained the enzyme program to the school nurse and told her

I was using biomedical approaches to Dylan's autism, she looked at me

with the most condisending sneer you can imagine and said " I guess it

makes you feel good that you have something you can control " !!!!!!!

You know, I've had people tell me my son will never speak, that he's

mentally retarded, that he'll have a life of trouble and defiance,

and that he should be put on psychiatric meds (mind you.....HE IS 4

YEARS OLD!!!!) so when this lady thought I was a nut and she knows so

much more than me, I was able to walk away without a second thought.

I am so used to that look people give a mom doing biomedical on their

kids. You know, the arched eyebrows and sudden change in the tone of

their voice? Like all of a sudden they realize they're talking to a

raging lunatic?

The one thing in my favor is I am a very tall woman with lots of

tattoos and the school office staff is a little intimidated by me

based on how I look.

I'm so sorry you were questioned like that....and the apple juice!!!

AAAGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!! That's my child's worst enemy too!!

Hey, anytime you need to vent you can give me a hollar!! If it wasn't

for these boards I would be talking my husband's ear off and the poor

guy needs a break!
