my DAN doctor also recommended 5htp but not for an extended period of time.

even though it seems people take it daily. natrol looks like a good brand.

start with 100mg

Subject: night wakings- solution?!

About a couple of times a month my son wakes up at 2:30 am for the day. Today

was such a morning. He currently takes 2mg melatonin nightly. I remember reading

that melatonin puts you asleep and 5HTP keeps you asleep. is this accuarate? If

so, what dosage would I give a 60yo 40 pound boy?

Yeast overgrowth can cause sleep disturbance. I have a yeast detox diet from our

DAN and some recipes we still use if you'd like them. If you'd prefer not to go

that route you could try a yeast fighting enzyme, kick up the probiotics for a

few days, and add either Trymethyl Glyceine or Betaine HCI...they're the same

thing just different names.

I am always concerned about how many people add in 5HTP. When combined with

MAOIs or SSRIs, 5-HTP can cause acute serotonin syndrome and seizures. So many

of our kids are already on these drugs.

A couple times a month to me, doesnt seem like its exclusively a sleep issue.

you could try time release melatonin if not already. for my son those random

middle of the night jamborees are sometimes yeast, having " no no " food , if his

ears are bothering him, and the full moon can really do it too. how is he when

he wakes up at 230? calm? giggly, pressure seeking? agitated scripty?these

behaviors may help you get to the underlying problem. i feel for you though.

230 makes for a realyy really long day! take care Libby

Re: melatonin -- we've found that brands are different. We like Kirkmans 2.5 mg

time released. We also add 1 Hylands sleep tablet which seems to ease them off

to sleep where the time release melatonin does not have the knock out effect of

regular melatonin. I take 1-2 Hylands = Sleep without groggy.

Klaire also makes a nice 2 mg Melatonin which we've used in the past with nice

results. At 50 lbs our DAn said we could go up to 4 mg.

Having said that the only times we get night wakings with that med combo is with

bad yeast so that would be is something to consider. Kirkman's Yeast Aid works

nicely 4 caps all at once. Good luck -- it's exhausting.
