I have those red cherry angiomas ,mostly where the skin is exposed to the sun.

They " re in dermatology books ; but if we all have them it's kinda suspicious,

like a warning sign.

I have them, but not too many, just hear and there. I read they are

harmless too and the Dr. doesn't seem to care. Lynn aih

Dear Pat, I had the same thing, it's pretty

normal. I was worried I wasn't cleaning the injection

site enough, and called the nurse. She said my legs

needed a break, to do injections in my abdomen for a

while. However, my doctor, when I next saw him, said

the red spots were due to lowered platelets, and not

to worry about them, they were to be expected.

In the mean time I began injecting in my abdomen,

which was MUCH less painful (not that the leg was that

painful to begin with), but my side effects got much

worse! My doctor said there was not enough fat in my

abdomen and that the medication was being absorbed too

quickly. This made me feel sicker, but I also realize

now that it also made the interferon less effective

since it cleared my body faster too. The point to

this being that if you want to change injection sites

you may want to rethink WHERE to change them to. Only

inject in body areas with a thick layer of fat.

When will you get your first viral load test

done?

Thanks for the information about the alchol swabs - had no idea. My husband

also gets those red marks sometimes but not all the time and we do rotate

where we give the shots from limb to limb and site to site.

Thanks again

The red marks are usually caused by a local irritation from the

perservative in the interferon. IT is neither dangerous, or something

to worry about. It is the same thing that causes the initial burning

when getting the shot. It is always better to rotate injection

locations for everyone to avoid local problems. If you use the same

site shot after shot, it is possible to get a true reaction. Either

make sure you alter the arm or leg every other shot, and try to move

to a slightly different location on that limb.

Unless it starts to get worse, or swells, really hurts, etc., just

ignore it.

For your FYI-the use of alcohol before giving an injection has been

shown, in most cases to be useless, and in some harmful. At best, it

gets rid of some of the surface dirt, but, also pushes bacteria

deeper

into the skin folds. When you puncture the skin, you now have that

bacteria finding a way under the skin and into your system.

Also, alcohol is not a very good sterilizing agent. It would take at

least half a day soaking in alcohol to get any benefit at all. I'm

not

saying don't swab the injection site, but, just understand, its more

of a habit that everyone expects, then it really will work. Marty

Janet,

I have had small red spots on my upper arms, shoulders, and upper chest

that resemble broken capillaries. I have had these now for a couple of years,

I guess starting just before I was diagnosed with AIH. They seem to be

multiplying and spreading. They do not hurt, or itch at all. I asked my

doctor once and he looked at them a shrugged his shoulders. He had no idea

why I would have them. I think that they are related to the liver disease. I

also have very visible tiny veins on my cheeks that make my cheeks very pink.

I have had those for even longer, I can't remember when they first appeared.

Thankfully my nose is not red too. f

What about the rest of you with AIH, do you have these little red spots

and lines?

Jo..... this sounds like spider aginoma.... I call them spider

veins and they are associated with liver disease..... I had them all

over my chest and face when I had end stage cirrhosis. Your doctor must

not be very knowledgeable as they are a common indication of liver

disease.

Elena,

Thanks. I did a web search on cherry angioma and the description is just right for my red spots but no reason was given for them appearing and no mention of being anything to do with liver disease or Imuran. Another of life's little mysteries.

The description of the 'spider' spots does not tally with my spots as mine do not have tiny red capillaries branching out from them like spider's legs.

Re: [ ] Questions

Hi Janet

your doctor is right. These spots are called cherry angionomas (i know i spelt it wrong) and they develop on people with Liver disease. They usually just appear on the trunk of the body. I have a few and are just pin prick sizes

janetelmes <janetelmes@...> wrote:

Dear All

Two questions please.

1.

Have any of you who take Imuran developed red spots on your body - sizes from pin prick to 2 mm across?

I noticed I had these several years ago and asked my doctor about them. All he said was that they happened to people with liver disease. I cannot remember what he said their name was so I cannot look them up on the web. (They don't look like the thing called spider something which is mentioned as a symptom of cirrhosis).

I have just re-read the notes that come with my Azathioprine tablets (Imuran) and red spots like these are listed along with other side effects as needing to be reported to ones doctor if the occur. My doctor did not say they were anything to do with my medication. I would just like to know something about them.

2.

Is there anyone in the group from the UK? I would like to know if anyone has had any dealings with Addenbrooke's Hospital.

Thanks

Janet,

I was just diagnosed with AIH yesterday.... I have had red bumps on my arm for several months now. They don't look like spider spots, though. Since I just joined the list yesterday, I don't know what yours were like... wre they just little red bumps? May I ask how long you've had AIH?

thanks, Beth

Janet,

I too have red spots on my arms that don't have spider legs...just red bumps. I was just diagnosed with AIH yesterday. I'm sure that's what my bumps are from. Before I was diagnosed I asked my regular doc about it and he gave a prescription cream to slough off the dead skin cells. Now I guess I know what they are....

thanks, Beth

I have had many red spots on my chest and ache on my face and chest. I also

had two spider veins on my face lasered. More keep on coming but the worst

is on my chest. Looks awful. I have used nizoral and noritate creams from

the dermatologist and it works a little in the beginning and then evens out.

Jo - I have the red spots they actually look like blood spots, all over

my chest and stomach and I don't look anywhere anymore I don't want to find

any more. I

also asked the doctor about them he said something about having them too and

they

are broken capillaries (not sure if that is spelled right) I also have liver

spots all

over it's a good thing they have make up when we have an important function

to go to.

Take care,

Gill, my guess (completely non-professional!) is that these are tiny broken capillaries -- maybe spider angiomas or something similar. I think these often go with liver disorders. Can't you call your doctor before July? Surely there is someone you can talk to about this; please check on it. It could be a sign that your liver is becoming worse.

Gill,

I too have the spider angioma's. All the doctors like to look at them. I

don't know why when they know it goes along with the liver damage. But

sometimes I think they are more interested in these than other problems.

Harper is right though you should check with your doctor.

Hi Dianne, MA

Your little shiny polka dots do not sound the same as my polka dots, but keep searching, someone will come up with something helpful!

Just before I was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis ( PBS I think, although my GI does not want to call it that, but it read it in my paperwork which I demanded from him and read very carfully. He likes to call it Fatty Liver Cirrhosis, because I am "obese"), I showed up with red splotches first on my face than on my bck and it itched like a son-of-a-gun. The dermatologist said it was Discoid Lupus, one of the Auto-imune Diseases (I already had been diagnosed with Arthiritis, Asthma and Diabetes at the time). I messed with creams for over 6 months slowly getting worse all over. During this 6 month period, I was diagnosed with the liver problem and had started on Ursodiol, 4capsules/day. I also researched a lot and added Milk Thistle, 4 capsules/day ( with the doctor's permission ).

Finally my primary care physicial put me on a 5,4,3,2,1 prednisone session, and my spots went away and I have not seen too much of them since. That was 5 years ago. Every once in a while one or two appear and itch ( especially around my nose, infamous butterfly design) but a little cream keeps it bearable and I had not had to do Prednisone since. Thank God.

I am doing pretty good overall, right now, but little things show up such as the arthritis in my thumb joint ( and will will force me to have an opperation.) Just 2 weeks ago my hip started hurting, and I am wondering if that is the first sign of a hip replacement??? I started caughing with my asthma again, and am wondering if I will get to be a full blown problem or is it only temporary. I have not stopped doing Albuterol inhaler 2-3x day and Advair 2x day, but at least I was under control and not caughing. Now I started caughing, and wondering where it will lead. Etc.

So life goes on. Just came back from a visit from my bother who lives about 130 miles from me and who is in the last stages of some crazy cancerous tumor on his liver. They had done radiation treatment, but it did not help. Now he is taking some very expensive pills and looked and felt better than he did 2 months ago when I last saw him. I guess they are always discovering new stuff. This "gold" pill seems to be doing something good. At least he is feeling better!

[ ] Red spots

Hello All

I was dx with pbc in August. At the time I noticed small red spots on my wrist and face (Just a few). I also noticed that the hepatologist seem to look carefully at them during the exam. Today I have found several new spots and I'm wondering if these are liver related. Has anyone experienced anything like this before. These spots do not go away and are small shiny, and very slightly raised. They do not bother me except for the fact that I don't know what they are and the hep did seem to take note of them. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Wishing you all well-Dianne, MA, pbc stage 3

Shirl-

Thanks for the info. I looked it up and it does appear to be what I have. Does the increase of these mean the liver disease is getting worse? I couldn't find anything that comments on this. Thanks-Dianne

Dianne --

Look Up " spider angiomata " or " angioma " and see if you can find

fotos.

from dermatolgychannel.net:

Overview

Spider angioma is so named because of its appearance: a central,

red, elevated area with surrounding broken blood vessels radiating

outward like a spider's legs. Many children and adults have a spider

angioma.

Causes

Spider angiomas are associated with childhood, pregnancy, liver

disease, birth control pills, and estrogen treatment. They may

develop for unknown reasons as well.

***** and it goes on... i have had them all the time, sometimes more

prominently, sometimes just more of them, mostly on forearms, upper

chest and neck. I've had some for the last year or so tthat look

like a vampire bite!!! Anyhoo, not all mine have the " spider "

appearance, so maybe yours don't? But that might be what you have.

My face is bright red with white splotches all over it. I am wondering if this

is a symptom of liver disease also. I know my hands and feet are like that but

I have never read that the face is also affected. I always blamed prednisone

for it.....but, now that I have been dx with this, am wondering if it isn't from

the liver issues.
