Oxypowder which is mag. and vit c together. It comes in a capsule. Maybe try increasing the cod liver oil. Mineral oil works here when we're desperate. I'm not sure how healthy it is to use. Good luck Help. Encopresis/constipation & trying to go gluten free My 9 yr old son (wt. approx 50lb) has been suffering lately from constipation to the point of encopresis. He's had the problem in the past, we had treated with mag supps, fish oil & he got better. We backed off on the mag and now he's having problems again & it's getting severe. I've read the info from Dana's site and enzyme stuff (thanks both of you) I'm not sure what to try next. He is back on mag citrate caps for the last month or so (won't drink the liquid) I gave 600mg yesterday, just started vit C. I've given him colace a couple times (every 4 days or so) I want to get him tested for food allergies as every thing seems to point in that direction. My concern for right now is rice. I know it can be constipating but what about rice flour, rice pasta and rice bread? If I give him foods with that in it will it make it worse? Also, I wanted to try him back on enzymes. We had tried it in the past but it seem to cause constipation. I recently purchased Swanson brand BioCore DPP IV Gluten Peptide Enzymes but am hesitant to use it with all the problems he is currently having. Any suggestions? We have Kaiser, I'm going to call them today to see if they will test him for food allergies. Thanks in advance!
Guest guest
, Thanks for the advice. My ds can swallow just about any size pill, problem is trying to get him to drink stuff. Only thing he will tolerate is water or milk. I've tried getting him to drink juice and he'll reluctantly drink a little but it's like pulling teeth to get him to down anything! re: Oxypowder, just looked it up. The main ingredient is Mag from oxides, I've read the oxide form can be constipating, but who knows, everyone is different. How much mag should I give him? I worry about giving too much. He's impacted so I don't know what to do to relieve that. We did s laxative suppository last week which worked but I don't want to get into a habit of it. Going to try gluten free brownies with pureed black beans and prunes today. ps. We have been using Trader Joe's probiotics, can't tell if it's helping. > > Aloe vera, a glass of warm water and lemon juice first thing in the morning('ll use it any time if I need to), juicing is supposed to help, probiotics. Guest guest
Hi, Mineral oil blocks absorption of nutrients, so only use it as a last resort, especially if your child is on a restricted diet so you're doing supplements already: you don't want them to miss anything. Regarding your question about food allergy testing and the GFCF diet: Most allergists only do IgE (immediate reaction, hives, throwing up, anaphylaxis (sp?), etc.) testing, and feel there is no value in IgG (delayed reaction, can show up anywhere in the body or in behavior) testing. A person can be reactive to a particular food only IgG and not IgE (I don't know if the reverse is possible). The GFCF diet is not just for people who are allergic (intolerant is often the term used for non-IgE sensitivities) to a particular food, but also for those who are unable to completely metabolize the proteins involved in gluten and/or casein, who may or may not have other tolerance issues for these foods. The problem is that they apparently break them down only to the level of peptides (chains of amino acids) instead of all the way to amino acids, and the end results are relatives of morphine (gluteo-morphin and caso-morphin, again not sure on the spelling). This is where the high pain tolerance, constipation, and other symptoms come from when they ingest gluten and/or casein (and soy often reacts similarly as it's also not fully metabolized, so don't substitute soy flour for wheat flour and/or soy milk for cows' milk when working onto the diet). It is recommended because of the drug-like effects of the gluten and casein if your child is incompletely metabolizing them that you not take your child " cold turkey " off wheat and milk, or you'll end up with the equivalent of an addict in withdrawal. Here is one plan for going gradually enough that you will limit the likelihood/severity of any withdrawal symptoms: http://gfcf-diet.talkaboutcuringautism.org/gfcf-in-10-weeks.htm (by the way, the tacanow.org website is loaded!, so spend some time exploring it). Hope this helps. From: w3m1@... <w3m1@...> Subject: Re: Help. Guest guest
If you go on the GHC they have a colon program for the oxypowder. I've gone up to 1200 mg in a day to get things going .I've done 3000mg for myself of vitamin c. My daughter is 100 lbs. How about applesauce? Exercise- jumping on a trampoline. Guest guest
Hi , One way of doing enzymes I've heard is to add them gradually before taking the gluten/casein/soy-containing foods away, so that by the time you remove the foods, if you decide to do that and the enzymes both, they're no longer getting the drug effects from them. I don't know if this is still a recommended option or not, however. I don't know about the question of constipation with the enzymes. Sorry I can't be of more help. Maybe someone else can give more information. From: carsnmotorcycles <athomenetjobs@...> Subject: Re: Help. Guest guest
different forms of magnesium will help with constipation -- magnesium oxide is good, I believe. I've got my daughter on a daily dose of liquid paraffin because it breaks up hard stool without causing cramps so if you have a blockage it will break it up. After that adding fibre allows the stool to move more easily. If you use rice make sure it's brown, better for you (loads of Bvits) plus fibre Sally carsnmotorcycles wrote: > My 9 yr old son (wt. approx 50lb) has been suffering lately from constipation to the point of encopresis. Guest guest
liquid paraffin and mineral oil are the same. There's science about its safety for use up to six months at a time. Tastes weird so you must put it into something nice. I put it in a fruit smoothie (figs in the smoothie for added oomph) Sally w3m1@... wrote: > Aloe vera, a glass of warm water and lemon juice first thing in the morning('ll use it any time if I need to), juicing is supposed to help, probiotics. Guest guest
There's some dispute about whether it blocks absorption of fat soluble vitamins and the general opinion seems to be that it is not absorbed at all. If you are considering it then read up for yourself. Guest guest
What kind of milk would you suggest instead of rice milk? What tastes ok. Almond, hemp, coconut. He will drink soy, but I have heard bad stuff about that too.  Also, my son with autism is getting ready to have 4 wisdom teeth removed. My older son lived on instant breakfast for a week. But he hasn't drunk milk for 10 years or more. He does eat popsicles; fudge and orange made by pet, which I know contains milk. From: danasview <danasview@...> Subject: Re: Help. All of those can be good, depending on the child. Almonds are high phenol. You can also try potato milk. Or, just use water. A " white " beverage is not required.
