And the other ones I have found have fillers that DS cannot tolerate.

So, we started 5-htp a little more than a week ago to try and help with

waking in the middle of the night and some general anxiety during the

day. Twin 4 1/2 year boys.

The one that was really having the difficulty sleeping is doing a

little better and doing well overall. The other, who had been sleeping

beautifully, has awoken around 2-3 am everynight since we started but

one and has been quite emotional, sort of the opposite of what we were

hoping to accomplish with the 5-htp.

Has anyone seen this kind of opposite reaction? Might it be one of

those things were if you already have enough, adding more sends you the

other way?

We just started 5-HTP for the first time last night. My son is 3, and uses

melatonin to fall asleep for almost a year. We recently had a neurotransmitter

test done and our DAN! recommended using 5-HTP to help him sleep more soundly.

Well.... He was up jumping around until midnight when I finally gave him another

melatonin. I have a call into our DAN! now to see if he's ever heard of this

opposite reaction before.

I like your idea of " Might it be one of those things were if you already have

enough, adding more sends you the

other way? " because in his neurotransmitter results he was elevated in

everything. I asked the question specifically about that, " why are we adding

more when he's already elevated in that inhibitory... " , and they said just try

it, it's the only way to counter the excitatory neurotransmitter.

I'm afraid to try it again.

Please let me know what you find out and if you plan to continue with it.

We kept up the melatonin even when we started the 5-htp. Without it

they didn't go to sleep.

I had read that we should give it two weeks. When I posted my

frustration a couple days ago we were on about day 12. And I swear

that the last 2-3 days have been quite good and with pretty good

sleeping. Still not great. But much more even emotionally. So,

for now, we're giving it some more time.

Melatonin is good for insomnia. 5mg to 12mg as needed. If you are

sleepy the next day you took too much. Go outside and put your face in

the sun, it will burn the melatonin out of your system, that's whether

you took a supplement or not. That's why sunshine wakes people up.

5HTP for insomnia, you always start with a low dose, take it for two

weeks, then add another increment if desired/needed. Either 50 or 100mg

increments, 200 to 300mg is a very common dose, but people take it for

weight loss up to 800mg and over. I've taken 1000mg/day for 10 years,

with some breaks. Start by taking it at night, then if you add another

increment, take that one in the morning, alternating each increment

added. Only add another increment if you feel like you've gotten

improvement but would like to see if you can get more. Take the

smallest effective dose.

These two supplements are compatible and some people do better with

their insomnia with both. If there is any component of depression or

pain syndromes, 5HTP may be very helpful. If someone got too much

serotonin, they would get extremely nauseous (and should stop the 5htp

for a few days and then restart at a smaller dose, don't go to the

higher again). I've been taking large doses for many years and have

never had that happen, and don't know of anyone it has happened to. That

is considered the only real possible side effect, btw.

just to add my two cents, i find that the slow release melatonin helps me sleep a bit longer at one time. i take 300mg 5-HTP and 4mg melatonin ER.  I may be increasing both.  also, i take 500mg GABA.
