Guest guest
Hi, my name is & I'm new to this group. I live in Los Angeles. My little Dean turned 2 last Oct. The month before, Sept, the word 'autism' entered my world as a possibility for some of his dev. delays, so I began an obsessive amount of researching. He was evaluated & diagnosed with ASD in Nov. (confirmed with 2 additional, independent evals). Began our Reg. Ctr. svcs mid-Jan (incls. 15 hrs ABA, 2 hrs OT, & 2 hrs ST a wk). Now that therapies have begun, my obsessive research is now focused on how I can best support Dean nutritionally. Read both DeFelice's books, both of which I could not put down. Absolutely hooked on the idea of enzymes to the point of obsession. Friends avoid me because all conversations with me somehow end up with me talking about enzymes & mucosal linings. I'm a self-professed nerd, & proud to be so. Just ordered Children w/Starving Brains & can't wait for it to arrive. But I have many questions & want more information... which brings me here. I started both my boys (also have a 6yr old, neuro-typical) on Peptizyde & Zyme Prime about 2 weeks ago. Already seeing some changes for the better in behavior with both. I'm sure you'll being seeing lots of questions coming from me, but for now, just wanted to introduce myself. Having this group available is an invaluable gift. Thanks to all who are a part of it. If you have any advice for someone like me who is just starting with the enzymes... like things you wish you had known sooner... I welcome & appreciate any and all advice. -
Guest guest
, Welcome! I know what obsessive means ... that would describe me. First know that the road to recovery is not a sprint but a marathon ... so don't try and do too much too quickly or you won't know what is helping and what is not ... Second, in my humble opinion ... every child should at least begin with a trial basis of a gluten free/casein free and possibly corn and soy free diet before starting or in conjuction with enzymes. My reason for this belief is, without doing so ... you will never know how far your child might have gone without having gluten and casein in their diet. My child must have BOTH enzymes and the diet to succeed. His gut is so messed up that he would never be able to handle just one or the other. Only after a year on the diet did we try reintroducing some foods into his life. We now know that he can't have gluten or corn EVER without having a huge response .... even with enzymes. But occassionally he is ok with having some minor infractions with soy and with tomatoes (another big issue for my child) My son can't ever have milk or any milk products .... or we spiral back down into severe symptoms....not even with enzymes. But together, he is doing wonders. I know not all children are as severe as mine ... some do fine on diet alone, some do fine on enzymes ... and some like mine need both ... But I truly believe in trying to see how far you can go ... before just limiting yourself to one option. Its a thought. Melinda > > Hi, my name is & I'm new to this group. I live in Los Angeles. Guest guest
Hey, we should get together and talk! This stuff is all I ever talk about either and my poor friends end up hearing more than they ever wanted to know about things like the mucosal lining . Another incredible book is " Changing the Course of Autism " by Jepson, MD. It is an incredible overview of the underlying biomedical issues that our kids have. Great explanation of things like the methylation cycle and skewed immune response. A must-read for another self-professed nerd like myself. I second the suggestion of trying the GF/CF diet. My son is very mild in symptoms (not diagnosed on the spectrum as a result), but he is one of the kids who needs the diet 100% and enzymes. He also needs to be off of all cane, beet, or corn-derived sugar (he can have agave, maple syrup, or honey). We also do low-phenol. We are considering the Specific Carbohydrate Diet too. It is a bit of a challenge at first, but we got used to it quickly and it heps SO MUCH that it is worth it. The diet alone reversed my son's regression. Enzymes also helped tremendously (we use Houston Nutraceuticals). It sounds like you are really on top of things for being new to this! This list is an absolute gold mine of information and help. -Sierra mom to Avery, 4.5, hyperlexia and Brennan, 6, NT > > > > Hi, my name is & I'm new to this group.
