Guest guest
Hello! My name is Dr. Tocco. I am a Defeat Autism Now! practitioner and the founder of Hope For Autism - www.hopeforautism.us I have a project that would be incredibly beneficial for the whole world of autism and I NEED YOUR SUPPORT. Oprah is holding a contest for a daytime talk show on her new network. Please watch my video audition for an AUTISM focused show (link below). I entered just a few days ago and have already received thousands of votes to move to page 7 of 120. I hope you will support me in this endeavor as I vow to represent the families affected. I have passionately dedicated my life to be part of the solution and this is an outstanding opportunity. The increased awareness, funding and public discussion would change the world of autism. Would you consider sending an email blast, asking your contacts to vote as much as possible? I cannot imagine a new health-related show that would be more important than one that is autism-focused. Oprah will make her decision soon, so if you will help, please act quickly! http://myown.oprah.com/audition/index.html?request=video_details & response_id=168\ 63 & promo_id=1 The goal is to get as many votes as possible before July 4. People can quickly vote multiple times by pressing the back button and then voting again. Please help me show Oprah and the world that we want to discuss autism openly in the mainstream media! If you have trouble with the link above, search video auditions for " tocco " and you will find it! Also note that the votes are only updated once every 15 minutes so THE COUNTER DOES NOT IMMEDIATELY GO UP, but every vote counts! PLEASE SHARE! Guest guest
To me, being immersed in a feature film project myself, what goes on TV first about autism is highly important. (I will later cc this to an Oprah contact, once the outcome is decided; I am not looking to blow your chances with Oprah, on that end. Oprah has her own bent on autism also-- one being how great are the " supermoms " taking care of kids, advocating, and doing it all-- certainly my experience) I and a close peer continue to fight for good and fair legislation too. I have discussed on this loop of many parents, for instance, how important it is for us to present to society that there is a generation that will not be able to function at the level our young children will, receiving so many good therapies all along. Will the approach of the show be such that they will be accepted in society. Do you support homeschooling options, safety in public schools (aware yet of those issues?) because believing children can be healed leaves some children vulnerable even to death by not like, caring what happens to others with difficult behaviors in schools. And lastly, can minorities access what you're promoting-- single moms, blacks, Asians, farm children, hispanics, etc. The DAN! group, a wonderful approach, I found in the state I going to has no insurance coverage at all for their therapies, much less 18 year old medicaid. And what if we were a family that needed medicaid even before that age when it's guaranteed to all? Many families with children can't afford the diet or the supplements, wonderful as they are. Sadly, the Obama administration has worked to pass universal healthcare, but isn't responsive to the specific needs of families & what works. And contributes federal money to organizations already shown to be corrupt. Nina Forest On Wed, 30 Jun 2010 19:02 +0000, " reneetoccodc " <reneetoccodc@...> wrote: Hello! My name is Dr. Tocco. Guest guest
Dear Nina, I appreciate your concern and you posed some wonderful questions that I would love to address. I suggest that there is not a show idea on the face of the earth more important than autism because there are literally dozens and dozens of topics that must be addressed. I believe that Americans NOT affected by autism need to see and understand what hundreds of thousands of families live with day in and out when they have a child or children on the spectrum. Just the increased awareness and understanding would have a profound effect on society. It is proposed that law enforcement officials begin to receive special training because dealing with autistic persons is totally different than with typical citizens. A police officer who is not knowledgeable can act in a way that induces unnecessary violence and tragedy. I am aware of the groups passionately advocating against the restraint policies and seclusion policies in schools. I am totally in support of all of these causes, in addition to options like homeschool. When a child receives a diagnosis, especially of autism, the whole family is greatly impacted and the condition affects every part of family life: the added financial burden, the career sacrifices, the marriage, holidays, vacation and leisure, sibling relationships and spirituality. Depending on the parent's response, the family can either be strengthened or destroyed. In segments I would give parents the opportunity to share the heartbreak and the challenges they face, raising a child with an illness or disability. This would raise public compassion and encourage more people to be involved to make a difference. The estimated divorce rate in families affected by autism is near 80% and parents of a child with ADHD are three times more likely to divorce. Professionals could give parents real life skills to cope with the stress of raising a disabled or sick child and will learn how to overcome emotions like guilt and grief. I would interview experts who'd give parents practical tools to not only help give children with autism and other conditions the best quality of life, but that will also teach parents how to promote wellness for the whole family. Families need strategies to resolve everyday issues and to learn how to embrace and enjoy life. I love the idea of highlighting super-moms and any stories that convey hope and victory. The economic impact of autism exceeds 90 billion dollars and is expected to more than double in the next decade. However, autism currently receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases. If I received a mainstream show, I would absolutely coordinate events to raise funds for not only research but also for treatment for children that are underprivileged. It is a fact that even families that are financially stable cannot easily afford care for autism. Funding is a major crisis and it would take involvement from someone like Oprah to make the rapid changes necessary. Even the political injustices can only be improved when the masses of people understand what is happened to the ever-growing population of families struggling with autism. Everything the autism community needs requires money, awareness and unity. As long as we hardly hear autism discussed in media, we're a long way away. I am absolutely not suggestion an exclusive biomedically-focused show. I am well aware that some children do not respond to biomedical treatment and that many families do not have access. However, it has been wonderful for thousands of children and there are simple principles that could be implemented even on Medicaid. I won't write anymore explaining all of my segment ideas as this has been lengthy enough. I hope I have answered your question and please feel free to contact me if you have any other concerns. I would love to learn more about your project! Kindest Regards, Tocco > > > Hello! My name is Dr. Tocco. Guest guest
You did good, very moving response. . . Did you post to the loop? I'm quite busy, as I have a potential investor to deal with. But I will see if I can get a couple of lines posted. . . What you have here would be good to be posted. I should have added that having done a certain legislation initially thru something my lobbying associate knew about, where we looked for millions of emails to move up thru competition, I know how timeconsuming and grueling that can be. For both of us, we had children who had suffered injustices we are devoting to righting. . . Thinking maybe I'll just send this. And I will be happy when I can get a moment to breathe, myself, to coordinate some information for you that might help you with Oprah, whether you make it as the top one or not. I hope you do. I have that statistic also in my compilation of statistics. That while autism services, as you know often are multiplied many times over in cost compared to regular child's or other children's procedures etc, often as much as 7 to 10X more, only 5% of the money raised in fundraising for the top 4 childhood illnesses goes to autism. (aside from autism, childhood diabetes, cancer, and leukemia) I'm going to go ahead and send this email to my associate, to post on his site. He twittered a million addresses or more to get recent safety legislation passed. (He recently was under unnecessary attack, as happens with activists, so I am careful about posting his name online.) Lately, my associate and I have been reading about the alarming amount of money raised still going into salaries of the top autism organization (not the director, but the research director's salary is $750,000 a year.) Or in government bureaucracy. I went thru 3 years of waiting out getting on a waiver in our state, to get 10 hours of help only a week for her, when her therapies and activities schedule is close to 45. And the system, which fought to be the monopoly contract, receives $6000 a month for her alone; and I was suppose to find a worker who could maintain her car to drive Fawn for $7 an hour, 10 hours a week. It's a good concept to get Oprah oriented to the needs of autism families. On our project, we are projected to make a lot of money (and also on a book I have before Wall Street for $6 million, " The Autism Brain: Putting Together the Pieces " about the 67 differences in the brain. (I'd like to get to do a radio show eventually, also!) And we as a team are committed to a huge portion of what we bring in going to something that makes things easier financially for autism families. But the numbers are so staggering, no matter which idea we discuss, what we can offer, if we succeed is just a dent! Did I mention that Oprah just signed on McCarthy for a talk show already? We also want to make America a more comfortable place for autism children growing up and their families. I have a daughter who is 20. Our feature film, " The Same Kind of Love " , is taken from the story of her dating life, the life of a successful water activist against a corporation, and the life of our top autism activist (and former Nascar driver, who hit the wall) against public school abuse. Thrown in is a character based on the water activists' immigrant grandfather who carried luggage for the stars who passed through the Chicago train station; he collected 150 of their autographs. (He serves as a mentor and teacher to one of the main maile, about standing up for the right thing and caring for your family.) It is a great thriller, and a good love story. Have some great music from an award winning Emmy writer, aslo about having space in the world to love and be loved as a young adult with autism. . .And right now, we're being considered at Dreamworks and even by Speilberg. Have met with big stars, like ny Depp and Hoffman. . . but for us, with autism to deal with and other physical issues among my core team, we have become " hungry artists. " And waiting after years of intense devotion to this, look forward to this might be our time, too. It's wonderful to see Hollywood open up to autism. But I do hope they will be careful about portraying what is real. I agree with you totally, to see the struggle of families, will afford more compassion and understanding, and fewer wrong misconceptions.
