The meaning of Ears that are red and hot

I was taught that hot reddened ears, especially when variable, are an

infallible guide to food allergy. Often only one ear reddens and heats.

Yes, my son has red-hot ears! He's constantly putting

a cold rag on them or asking me to put my cold hands

on them!

Any thoughts on what might cause this?
