I haven't posted here in ages mainly because all is going very well for my 5

year-old son

and I have been finally able to focus on other parts of our lives, but he now

needs fillings

and I am not sure what to expect at the dentist. If anyone can share their

experiences and

advice in this area I would really appreciate it. His appointment is tomorrow

afternoon.

Thanks,

molly

Hi Molly

My sons like going to see our dentist - they go every 6 months for a clean

and calcium treatment (NOT fluoride treatment). He is really good - uses a

camera which plays up on a TV screen to examine their teeth . . and they

count them all, what color are they, etc etc All a bit of a game. So it

depends on your child's experience of the dentist and the dentist

him/herself. The big obvious observation is that if your son is needing a

filling, make sure its not an amalgam one - there are lots of alternate

options available now

Probably the biggest question is, why does your son need fillings at all?

Soon he'll be losing his " baby teeth " so its no big deal really that he

needs a filling in these, BUT I would urge you to get to the bottom of

what's causing his tooth decay before he grows his adult teeth - look at his

cleaning regimen, magnesium intake, sugar intake etc etc and correct these

over the next few months so that he never needs fillings again.

Good luck

:-)

I would refuse amalgam and require composite [white] fillings only.

And I would refuse any fluoride treatments.

Some children do very well, and others are almost if not completely

impossible to treat.

Communicate with your dentist and explain the situation. Let them

know how to deal with certain behaviors your child might show and

how to deal with them should they arrise. Most don't understand or

know what to expect with ASD children.

Schedule a time when there will be few people around. Be firm about

your presence in the room, bring along comfort items, and do what

ever you can at home to prepare him for the dentist.

Praying won't hurt either.

If your first attempt to get the fillings done goes awry, don't

force the situation. Consider having the dentist doing one filling

at a time to limit the stress.

Good luck
