Instead she will spend at least a couple of hours stimming in her bed while she tries to get herself into sleep mode. Tonight we tried melatonin 1mg with 100mg of magnesium (Kirkmans) and for the first time ever my child is asleep at 8.30pm. Obviously I am completely delighted and I still don't know how the night will go but still.... i wanted to hear from all the veterans out there. What are your thoughts about melatonin? Will she become addicted? My ped GP was very against her taking it. In Israel you can't even buy it over the counter. Thank you!
Guest guest
I believe the stomach pain happens with my son, but can't figure out why. The melatonin doesn't work here anymore either. It did for a long time, when nothing else did. The pediatrician said I could give him up to 6mg. The more I increased it(up to 3mg) the more hyper he was, so I figure it is on the list of things working opposite now. D. Guest guest
When I was young the inside of my stomach felt like it was jumping around, just like jumping beans were in there. It was awful.  It helps me cope when I can understand what my son is going through. That way, I know what I am looking for or talking about when he sees the doctor. Guest guest
Hello,  My son also had trouble going to sleep he would lay and stim for a long time. I went to a sleep specialist and he first recommended Melatonin because he said it was the safest thing to use since it was already something your body produces. He said there should be no side effects but that your body can get used to it and it might not be as effective. Then he said just to take a break and start again.  It did work for my son but it only stays in the system for about 4 hours so he would be up again after about 4-6 hours of sleep. My doc said we could give it to him again but there was not enough time to let him sleep for another 4 hours.  We next tried clonidine I believe it was called and it didn't work very well. We are now on trazodone and it has been wonderful. I give my son his pill at 6:00pm, he is sleeping by 8:00pm and he doesn't get up until I wake him at 6:00am for school. On the weekends he gets up on his own between 6-7am.  I never thought I would have my son on a sleep medication but I weighed the pros and cons of it and he is able to focus so much more when he can sleep all night. It has also been great for us because I was exhausted.  You just have to do what feels right for you and your family.  Good luck, From: Yarkoni <tanya.yarkoni@...> Subject: melatonin - my kid is sleeping )) Date: Tuesday, February 2, 2010, 12:57 PM  Hi everyone, I just wanted to let you know that for the last couple of years my 3 year old daughter has not been able to fall asleep before 10pm. Guest guest
does anybody know if melatonin (1 mg) has any negative effects if you are currently taking Virastop 2x? Guest guest
Melatonin works great on myself and both kids but NOT my husband who has sleep issues. Our 12 you ASD son has always stayed up until 10:30-11 and he usually doesn't sleep late. The melatonin does help him fall asleep - used it last night so I'm going to try to notice if he is better able to concentrate on his school work today after sleeping well. ND told my husband NOT to take melatonin and it was explained that the Pineal gland can cut down on the manufacturing of melatonin, naturally, if you're taking melatonin. I could not find any research to support that so don't know if it's true. Our very knowledgeable lady at The Vitamin Shoppe recommended my husband try Passion Flower (drops). They were out so we haven't done so yet. She has also recommended everything else in the book for him and nothing has worked so we're hoping Passion Flower might. Guest guest
Hi Deb ---> ND told my husband NOT to take melatonin and it was explained that the Pineal gland can cut down on the manufacturing of melatonin, naturally, if you're taking melatonin. I could not find any research to support that so don't know if it's true. > From what I've read and experienced I really do not believe this to be true. I read a study some time ago for which the life of me that I cannot find sorry, where the Professor conducting the study ended up giving it to himself and his wife at fairly low doses every day for a year and half and counting. Taking melatonin I believe has no bearing on what a person would produce meaning it does not inhibit a person's own production of melatonin. Guest guest
Hi, for those of you with older kids who won't mangle equipment ... my son had sleep onset difficulties like yours that he usually handled by rocking his head or body back-and-forth to fall asleep ... kind of like a sensory thing to down-regulate. Well, it stopped working last year (at around age 11) and he'd lie in bed for a couple of hours. Long story short, we did the Melatonin and it worked fine for us. But, I'd read that you don't get all of the REMs you need (not sure if it's true)? So, anyway, we invested in a Proteus (on amazon dot com or mindmodulations dot com) machine ... which uses frequency following response (FFR) to entrain the brain to go from an alert state to sleep. Basically, using binaural beats and pulsing lights, it " pulls " the brainwaves downward from beta consciousness (faster frequency) to lower and lower into a sleep state. (Epileptics cannot use this). It works like a charm!!! No more Melatonin. The first 2-3 weeks, he loved it and wouldn't do without it. Now, he doesn't need it at all. It's as if it re-wired his brain or something! Worth a try ... also there's settings on the Proteus for daytime " focusing " and fun things, too. Might be helpful for dreamers, ADD types. (BIG p.s. Because of our success with the Proteus, I found a local psychologist who specializes in neurofeedback. My son was tested and found to have an " abnormal " brain (qEEG study) compared to a nationally normed large sample. He's high beta and hypercoherent, basically opposite of ADD, more like OCD or Asperger-ish. Using NASA-patented technology, he plays video games and the doctor programs the game to futz out (slow down, fail) when he's using the wrong brainwaves to think. And, it's fixing him! His moods are good, no meltdowns, and things are getting better each time. Highly recommended if you can find a certified practitioner of the SMARTBrain technologies!!). (p.s. he said that the neurofeedback also fixes sleep issues ...). > > Hi everyone, > I just wanted to let you know that for the last couple of years my 3 year old daughter has not been able to fall asleep before 10pm.
