Hi there,

2 of my boys are on the SCD (modified, ie no casin and no phenol rich food) with

supplements under the care and guidance of Dr. Bock and Dorfman.

Subject: Does anyone do SCD with supplements?

Hi,

I was thinking of trying SCD on my PANDAS kid - but read that it might not work

if your child has been treated for yeast and is on supplements? My daughter is on

OLE and GSE right now. Has anyone tried it with supplements already in place?

Thanks,

Susi

We are planning to start SCD this summer. From what I understand, when you do

the intro diet (only 2-5 days) you stop all supplements. Then you gradually add

in more foods and supplements one at a time to make sure they are being

tolerated. The intro diet is intended to give the gut time to heal with minimal

foods needing much digestion. Also, since it is low in the starchy carbs and

refined sugar, it is a great diet for those who have or have had problems with

yeast. Some supplements, or supplement fillers/additives are illegal, but OLE

and GSE, are fine, if you find that she can tolerate them once you start the

diet. We have already switched our multi to a SCD legal one, and are working on

switching our other vitamins and probiotics to legal ones. I've read Breaking

the Vicious Cycle and www.pecanbread.com for most of my research on the topic.

The pecanbread group has been great for helping me understand the diet as

well.

Purpledragon: Yikes and thanks! I looked at the GAPS website. We have been

gfcfsf for so long and now 25 intolerant food free for 6 months, so I can handle

the cooking. I just don't think my kids will eat!My son hates hot/warm soups

(actually all soups), and I am worried that he will lose weight - we havn't

gotten him to gain weight in a year.Luckily my dd loves soup!

I will pull back on the supplements for the first week. We are moving this week,

so I must be crazy for my kids to do this.....

You all are so helpful!

I'll post an update soon,

Susi

My kids won't eat soups either, so we do the diet without them. I really didn't

think my kids would eat but amazingly we had only one bad week getting used to

this. Despite how strict the diet says it should be, people on the GAPSHelp

list are actually pretty creative about finding ways to make the diet

work. Poor weight gain is another thing that this diet helps with, but I can

really understand how that could make you very hesitant to try it. There also

seems to be a spectrum of personal approaches ranging from SCD and pecanbread to

GAPS. You sound very savvy with diet and food and I'm sure you'll find a way to

help your kids, whatever that needs to be!
