Guest guest
Have you tried carnitine? Also, have you tried enzymes, and if so which ones? Taurine may also help. Do you do amino acids? Do you supplement zinc? Is his appetite low or does he eat a lot but not gain weight? -Sierra > > My 2 yr old has lost 1 1/2 pounds since he has 1 year old. He has fat > absorption issues. Guest guest
Hi Maya, It was hard to get my son to gain weight on the GFCF diet. He had fatty acid metabolism issues and so many busted biochemical cycles. I did a lot of research, trial and error and he has put on a few pounds over the last three months AND grown a couple of inches too! As someone else suggested, Carnitine helps escort fatty acids across the mitochondrial membranes. You should check out Dana's View website for mitochondrial disorder supplementation info. If you google carnitine, you will see lots of stuff about weight loss. Don't be put off. It's the same principal - get the fat into the cells to use as fuel. Good healthy animal products are the best place to get easily absorbable fats (if you are not a vegan family). For more information: http://www.nourishinghope.com/nourishing_hope_blog/2007/05/nourishing-trad.html Look at the Weston A Price diet and the book Nourishing Traditions. http://www.westonaprice.org/ The thing is, you need to address the mito/fat absorption and any gall bladder/bile insufficiency issues BEFORE doing anything else. You can cause problems loading the diet with fats that can't be processed and absorbed. I started my son with mito support supplements and homeopathic drops to support gall bladder and other functions. Then I started cooking his foods in marrow fat that was left over from making home made bone broths (healthy free range out-door animals of course). You might want to get a cholesterol test before loading on saturated fats. Many of our kids are actually too low and need the fats to help them manufacture cholesterol to remyelinate neurons. http://www.greatplainslaboratory.com/cholesterol/web/ You should aim to have your child above 140 total cholesterol. If they are lower than that..... there are so many things that can go wrong. I've managed to get my son's up from 125 to 138 in three months with just diet alone (can't do the supps because of lanolin allergy). Saturated fats and palmitic acid (palm oil). Worth getting a cholesterol test done so you have a better idea of what's going on. Have you done a fatty acids test (metametrix) and a CDSA (doctors data) recently. If not, those would be helpful too. Unfortunately there is a lot more to it than just feeding your kid french fries - if you want them to put on healthy weight. Good luck! > > My 2 yr old has lost 1 1/2 pounds since he has 1 year old. He has fat > absorption issues. My son required mito cocktail before he could properly absorb fats. http://www.danasview.net/mar05.htm Dana
