Guest guest
Sorry, I couldn't answer your question through the poll, but my answer would be both. My son was exclusively breast fed until 4 months. At that time he got very irritable and I learned I wasn't making enough milk. I supplemented with formula. Around the same time, he started having seizures and stopped developing. My NT son also need bottle supplementation. (Mom to ) > > > Enter your vote today! Guest guest
As it stands, this poll is about 84% breastfeeding... I am wondering about this... With my daughter, I bf'd her until she was 2... I had given up all milk products while breastfeeding, because she had an extreme case of colic... I wonder if things would have been different if I had given up wheat and taken some fish oil... I also wonder, how many of these moms who breastfed had a family history of autoimmune disorders, also... Anyway, I just found it interesting that the majority are breastfed... Guest guest
There should be a third response: both. I am sure I am not hte only one who did both. Due to my son's early lack of weight gain, and my subsequent constant struggle iwth milk supply, my now 5 year old son was breastfed but also supplimented with formula. We started solids at 5 mos, earlier than I planned. He has significant delays, was borderline ASD, now only delays and sensory issues remain after 1.5 years of biomed. My NT 2 year old was BF and never had a drop of formula. In fact, she would not even take a bottle of breastmilk. She is far ahead in all development areas. denice wrote: Enter your vote today! Guest guest
My son has not been diagnosed on the spectrum, but he is missing his Corpus Callossum (part of the brain). He does hand flap when he is excited, has sensory integration disorder, and a hard time with abstracts. I breastfeed until he was 7 months exclusively (avoiding all dairy) than I got pregnant with #2. I supplemented with soy, than at 10 months went to formula only (yuck). My mother has Lupus and my twin has some auto immune disorders. was also a c-section. I would be interested to see how many kids were born in a natural birth, vaginal with medication, and c-section. Guest guest
> I agree, there is the issue of how long you breastfed, when introduced foods, what kind of birth, etc. My son was breastfed for two years. He had formula about twice because I pumped and ran out a few times. I do think I introduced solids too early and he was predisposed to allergies. I dont know that this poll is very effective because many of us on this poll are educated, middle class and obviously are very invested in whats best for our child which makes us more likely to breastfeed. Having said that I dont want anyone to think I am implying that they are less invested for having not breastfed. I have not seen any link with breastfeeding among parents of ASD kids in my own experience. (not that this is at all conclusive) There have been suggestions about the fat in breast tissue holding toxins which would than be passed to an infant. I had read this theory before I had my son but everything pointed to the idea that the good of breastfeeding outweighs the bad. Its all very interesting though. Guest guest
I think the real question should be " How long did you breastfeed your child if you did? " I know I could have answered yes to the breastfeeding Q, b/c I did breastfeed him for 6 weeks, but I still said no b/c I did not feel that it really accounted for much. With my 2nd son, I breastfed him for 14 months and I consider that a yes to breastfeeding. > > As it stands, this poll is about 84% breastfeeding... > I am wondering about this... Guest guest
I have 5 kids which were all induced. I had an epidural for each birth. The twins are diagnosed as PDD-NOS. hisblueeyes <hisblueeyes@...> wrote: , Thank you for posting this. I have always wondered if my epidural had something to do with my son's autism. When they added a 2nd shot into my epidural, my hearing was suddenly metallic. Everyone/thing sounded robotic - the dr asked if I meant that I tasted metal and I clarified that I was hearing robots speak. Anyway, hear or taste - there must still be metals of some kind in there. If you ever come across anything else on these lines, I would definitely be interested. I found it to be interesting. <<At the 2001 APPPAH conference, Dr. Mehl-Madrona explained a presumed mechanism for the pitocin/epidural/autism connection. Because the newborn neurological system does not yet have the protective myelin layers around the brain and nerves, they are inflamed by the bupivicaine used in epidural anesthesia; it destabilizes the membranes of the developing brain.. When pitocin is also used (either for induction or augmentation), this results in greater exposure to the oxytocin family than would occur in a normal birth. Because of the nerve inflammation, the nerves develop an adverse reaction to the high levels of oxytocin . . . sort of an allergic reaction. Later in life, when the child responds to social situations by the normal production of oxytocin, this serves as a trigger for the allergic reaction to oxytocin, and the child develops an adverse response to social situations. Breastfeeding is a social situation, stimulating oxytocin production in both the mother and baby. Prolonged exposure to both pitocin and epidural during labor could trigger the same sort of aversive response to breastfeeding. >> http://www.healing-arts.org/mehl-madrona/#intro > Enter your vote today!
