Guest guest
A night guard wouldn't have helped because he grinded them during the day. We never heard him grinding them at night. And no, they never had any suggestions to make him stop it that worked. He pretty much stopped after he got his stainless steal teeth in. And a couple of months after, he stopped doing it completely. My guess is that it just didn't have the same sensation as it did before. Breaking a tooth off at the root would be very painful I would think, but didn't seem to bother him at all. Guest guest
>While waiting for that, he broke off one of his front uppers all the way down to the root. We called and then we got in fast. I recommend if you set up an appointment, call it an emergency.< I am a dental assistant, retired. The only treatment I know of for grinding teeth (bruxism) is a night guard. Knowing our kids I can't see them wearing one. SO what did they do to stop your son from grinding his teeth? It is possible that our kids suffer from TMJ syndrome and can't tell us. Was this the case with your son?

Guest guest
Maybe it’s an oral issue. Have you tried re-directing him to something else to chew on? I know when my son was constantly chewing on his shirt sleeve, his teacher gave him a rubber stick that he hung around his neck that he learned to chew on instead. It worked, but don’t know where to get one of those. Grinding Teeth My boy Sebastian is 3 years old (high funtioning autism) and recently started grinding his teeth throughout the day. It is audible from across the room as he does it. I wondered if anyone had any ideas on how to get him to stop. I know that he is using it as his current stim, but I want to keep his dental health intact.

Guest guest
A Possibility is that he may be trying to get the " input " into his mouth/jaw.My son also grinded his teeth, still does(he's 10)I took him to the dentist and they put him under general anesthesia, did xrays .At the time my reasoning was to rule out any dental issues(pain)because he was having aggressive behavior and they found that he was in pretty good dental health..ended up just needing a sealant on a few teeth. We'd known for some time that he grinded his teeth because the dentist was able to examine his teeth and determine whether or not there was erosion(due to reflux) or not.He has no enamel left on his teeth from grinding them. The good thing is that these are his baby teeth that are effected so hopefully his permanent teeth wont have that problem when they come in. Guest guest
also I meant to ask..does he like " chewies " ? toys that are meant for the kids to bite on or chew? Is he a picky eater or will he try things like prezels,or carrots..things that are sortof hard that can give some " input " into his mouth. My son has craved this type of input for years(very chewy)likes crunchy things, will often take my hand and push his chin into it very hard trying to get deep pressure. Just a thought. Guest guest
My son grinds his teeth also. (It sounds worse than nails on a blackboard, it's horrible!) Anyway, his OT gave him a chewy tube thing (it has the consistency of rubber but it's made of stuff that is rubber and latex free, I just can't remember what it's called) for him to chew on. Unfortunately he's still not going for it but I haven't given up. It's supposed to be excellent for oral stimulation. Check out this website for all kinds of nifty stuff: www.abilitations.com They also send me a huge catalogue (semi-annually?). ALSO, his OT is going to teach me a couple of different oral massage protocals that might also help with his need for oral stimulation. HTH! Guest guest
Hey, Stacey! My son does the deep pressure through the chin thing too! He'll kneel on my lap, wrap his little arms around my head in a bear hug, plant his chin on the top of my head and push his chin down and grind his teeth. Guest guest
I've bought every toy/product for oral sensitivity and nothing compares to the manual pressure I can provide to my son to satisfy that need.I have tried for years!! Even making our own toys for him but still no success.I think it is completely beneficial for you and for your son to learn how to give himself that input so that he's using appropriate things to get that input that he needs so badly. Guest guest
Huh, that's interesting. When my son was around 2 he would put our hands on the sides of his face and go " oOoOoOoOo " while pressing our hands into his face. He still chews up his clothes. We've tried gum, but he'll only chew until the flavor is gone - he can burn through a plen-t-pak in about half an hour! The chewing thing seems to come & go. I'm not sure how he'd feel about a chewy thing. Are they inconspicuous? He's full inclusion, so it would be good for him to have something that wouldn't attract a lot of attention. My son does the deep pressure through the chin thing too! He'll kneel on my lap, wrap his little arms around my head in a bear hug, plant his chin on the top of my head and push his chin down and grind his teeth. (I can hear him grinding his teeth through my head! Ewwwwww!) Kat SNIP--- <all4cam@...> wrote: ....also I meant to ask..does he like " chewies " ? toys that are meant for the kids to bite on or chew? Is he a picky eater or will he try things like prezels,or carrots..things that are sortof hard that can give some " input " into his mouth. My son has craved this type of input for years(very chewy)likes crunchy things, will often take my hand and push his chin into it very hard trying to get deep pressure. Just a thought. Stacey
