KLUG CHOSEN RESEARCHER OF THE MONTH December proved to be a busy month for Dr. L. Klug, a primary researcher in the area of cancer prevention and the president of ImmunaCare Corporation, which developed the estrogen metabolism test used with our Women's Hormonal Health Assessment. He addressed over 250 anti-aging practitioners at their winter meeting in Las Vegas, and he recorded an interview with S. Bland, Ph.D., board chairman of the Institute for Functional Medicine and editor of the monthly audiotape newsletter Functional Medicine Update. Dr. Bland took this special opportunity to bring subscribers up to date on breaking developments in measurement of estrogen metabolism and the new treatment alternatives made possible by advanced assessments. According to Dr. Bland, this research suggests that estrogen metabolites may have as great as if not greater influence on an aging woman's physiology than the source hormones themselves. Moreover, it is now becoming more widely understood that nutrition and lifestyle changes can modify patterns of metabolism to improve a woman's health outlook. Although research linking estrogen metabolism dates back to the 1960s, only recently have research and development efforts by Dr. Klug and his team made it possible to measure the downstream metabolites 2-hydroxyestrone and 16alpha-hydroxyestrone accurately, cost-effectively, and conveniently. ImmunaCare's most recent advance is to develop the methodology for measuring these markers in a single serum sample. Concluding the interview, Dr. Klug underscored the potential of our emerging understanding of estrogen metabolism. " This is probably as important, " he explained, " as the breakthroughs that followed the recognition of the different types of cholesterol and their effects on heath.
