Guest guest
My dd is 2.5 and has struggled with constipation since about 13 months-when she really started eating more solid foods. I always thought it was food related, but didn't pinpoint the offenders until December. Well, she improved quite a bit once those foods were removed. She had gotten so bad as to have bloating, stools full of undigested food, couldn't sleep for more than 45 minutes at a time, etc. (I have reasons to suspect celiac, but her bloodwork was negative. I plan on getting her a gene test when we save up the $.) Anyway, she definitely has a bacterial overgrowth from the long term constipation. Her ped suggested we try a reuteri supplement for several weeks to see if that helped. It helped some, but she is still only having a bm every 3-4 days (this is with 2t lactulose 2x a day). She has a long history of with holding, but has used the potty at her own initiative when the stool isn't hard and motility has been ok. I don't think she is too stretched out, as she had a barium enema in January and the dr said her colon was only slightly larger than normal. I think the lactulose isn't helping (does it feed bacteria?), and her intestines can't heal until the bacteria is under control. I feel I need to get a little more agressive, especially after searching the archives here and finding all the posts on toxin producing bacteria. I suspect this is what she has, as her stool smells strongly of ammonia. She still has quite dark circles under her eyes and bruises easily, although her feet and nails started growing again, and her cradle cap and eczema went away! So my theory is: Food intolerances (gluten and dairy) led to chronic constipation led to bacterial overgrowth My plan of attack: 1. antibacterial-ole or oregon graperoot dosage? 2. proteases any chewables available, with food only or work up to inbetween meals also? 3. magnesium -ordered Oxypowder used Natural Calm before, she will no longer take it 4. vitamin c what kind- must be chewable or gummy thing 5. Continue reuteri (it's 10 billion cfu) and maybe add Culturelle 6. Calcium butyrate? or something else to help with healing Does this sound reasonable? Any advice as to dosages for a 28lb, 2.5 year old who is especially sensitive to taste & texture, doesn't like juice or purees, and doesn't understand being bribed? She is nonvaxed, I don't have any reason to suspect yeast or viruses or metals, she is not ASD, still breastfed, eats pretty good " traditional foods " style. Thank you.
